Kyle Walker apologises on Twitter after being pictured taking legal high 'hippy crack'
"I won't be doing this again and hope that no one else is
influenced into putting their health at risk by my actions," says
England defender
KYLE WALKER has issued a public apology after he was pictured appearing to suck on a balloon full of “hippy crack” on a night out.
The Tottenham and England defender was seen inhaling from a black balloon several times during the evening.
Walker footed the bill as he and a group of pals downed champagne and passed around small silver canisters of potentially lethal – though legal – nitrous oxide which costs £1.50 a hit, and has effects likened to those of crack cocaine or heroin.
Walker has now issued a public apology on his Twitter account.
He wrote: "Apologies for not commenting sooner on a story about me today. I've been training and am focussed on Tuesday's game for England.
"Now I know the health risks, it was poor judgement on my part.
"I won't be doing this again and hope that no one else is influenced into putting their health at risk by my actions."
A source who was at the club at the time revealed: “More and more canisters of laughing gas started appearing. Kyle and his pals were getting well carried away with them. He didn’t mind one bit that people were taking pictures.”
Nitrous oxide gives a feeling of intense euphoria but users can die of suffocation.
The gas can also cause strokes, seizures, blackouts and stress on the heart.
His public apology echoes the statement he gave to the Mirror on Saturday night: "I have now been made aware of the health risks associated with this practice and accept that my actions were of poor judgement. I hope this will in no way influence or encourage others into putting their own health at risk."
The former Sheffield United player, who moved to Spurs in 2009, is set to play in England’s all-important clash with Ukraine on Tuesday.
The photograph above was taken as he was recovering from an injury that forced him to miss England’s friendly double-header against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.
Following Friday night’s 4-0 victory over Moldova at Wembley, the star tweeted yesterday: “Great to get another start last night, we did exactly what we had to do. On to Ukraine next.”
“Hippy crack”, which first became popular with followers of 1960s psychedelic rock band The Grateful Dead, has swept through clubs across the UK.
The Home Office said: “Nitrous oxide is a legal substance but like all drugs there are health risks and it should not be experimented with.”
