Chelsea youngster Marco van Ginkel is set to be ruled out until next season after suffering a horror injury.
Van Ginkel lasted just 10 minutes of his first start for the Blues, in the Capital One Cup win at Swindon, before landing awkwardly on his right knee after a challenge involving the home side's Mark Pritchard.
Chelsea immediately feared the worst for the young Dutchman, who tried to play on but had to give way soon afterwards.
Now, preliminary examinations have confirmed he has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in the next 48 hours.
The £8million arrival from Vitesse Arnhem has been told to expect nine months on the sidelines, ruling him out of next summer's World Cup.
Chelsea have yet to confirm the length of his absence, but Van Ginkel received a message of support from Blues team-mate Michael Essien, who suffered three similar injuries in as many seasons and missed the 2010 World Cup.
Essien tweeted: "Stay strong Marco. You have our support. You will be back stronger. Get well soon my friend."
Jose Mourinho is also set to be without Ramires for Saturday's big trip to Tottenham.
The Brazilian, who replaced Van Ginkel at the County Ground and scored the Blues' second goal, was substituted at half-time because of a hip problem.
