Player Ratings: Brazil 2-1 Uruguay

Goal rates the individual winners and losers as the home nation qualified for the Confederations Cup final

By Kris Voakes in the Mineirao, Belo Horizonte

  • Julio César
    84
    5

    Julio César

Produced a moment to savour when he dived low to his left to save Diego Forlan’s 14th-minute penalty, but then handed Uruguay a chance to make up for it when not getting enough on a punch from Pereira’s long throw.
  • Daniel Alves
    56
    30

    Daniel Alves

Didn’t provide nearly as much of an attacking threat as he can, although he did force a save from Muslera with one long-range effort. Robbed of possession when he lingered too long with Suarez hanging around, but did well to get back and win the ball back from the Liverpool man.
  • Thiago Silva
    45
    36

    Thiago Silva

Picked up a bit of a knock when rising high above Lugano at a Uruguay free-kick, then just about retained possession after Luiz Gustavo had sold him short. Played the visitors back into the contest with an unnecessary pass in his own area which allowed Cavani to pounce and score.
  • David Luiz
    34
    56

    David Luiz

Booked for his ridiculous decision to haul back Lugano in the box as Uruguay were awarded an early penalty. Showed a cooler head for the most part thereafter as Brazil were left stretched on the counter at regular intervals.
  • Marcelo
    68
    16

    Marcelo

Did well to get a great low cross in which Fred almost turned home ahead of Godin, but was easily beaten to Thiago Silva’s dangerous pass by Cavani as Uruguay equalised. Got forward with decent regularity but was often closed out well.
  • Oscar
    30
    48

    Oscar

Too quiet for too much of the game, and his inability to cross first time on his left foot allowed Uruguay to cover when Brazil broke down the flank. Set up Neymar with one neat pass, but his regular contributions of previous matches were missing here.
  • Luiz Gustavo Dias
    55
    14

    Luiz Gustavo Dias

Looked a little flustered in the opening stages, shinning one ball straight out of play, but he was quickly back to muscle Suarez out of a good attacking position. Booked for his high follow-through on Rodriguez just before the break.
  • Paulinho
    99
    17

    Paulinho Top of the Match

Was tidy but largely ineffective early on, but then released Neymar with a fantastic through-ball which led to Fred’s key opening goal. Pushed up into the attacking midfield line after Hernanes replaced Oscar and delivered with a towering header at the far post to send Brazil to the final in Rio.
  • Fred
    64
    12

    Fred

Couldn’t quite reach Marcelo’s low cross as Godin conceded what should have been a corner, but then mopped up well after Muslera parried Neymar’s effort to give Brazil the lead. Struck a clean volley well over from Bernard’s excellent cross.
  • Neymar
    99
    91

    Neymar

Found himself completely frozen out for most of the first half, but then he stole in from behind to force a parry from Muslera as Fred opened the scoring. Could have done better when played in by Oscar but shot straight at Muslera, but then sent in the corner for Paulinho's winner.
  • Hulk
    30
    56

    Hulk Flop of the Match

Did well to win a corner off Caceres having initially looked to have lost his chance to deliver, but then leant back too far as he looked to curl a left-foot shot into the far corner. Too easily phased out of the game before being replaced by Bernard.

Substitutions

  • Dante
    48
    7

    Dante

Came on late in the day for Neymar.
  • Hernanes
    58
    7

    Hernanes

Brought on for the ineffective Oscar and added extra direction to the midfield.
  • Bernard
    64
    12

    Bernard

Replaced Hulk just after the hour mark and immediately had the crowd on their feet as his neat play set up Fred.
  • F. Muslera
    3
    2

    F. Muslera

Troubled little during the first half until Neymar breached the back line to force a parry which Fred made the most of. Occasionally raced out to punch when his defence could have dealt with balls, but always did enough to clear until Paulinho’s headed winner.
  • Diego Lugano
    3
    1

    Diego Lugano

Defended with his usual force and even won a penalty when his direct run towards the ball forced David Luiz to panic and haul him back by the shirt. Showed great anticipation on a couple of dangerous crosses as Uruguay dealt well with Brazil’s aerial threat.
  • Diego Godín
    2
    1

    Diego Godín

Kept out Fred with great anticipation from Marcelo’s low cross and provided a sturdy partner for Lugano throughout as Brazil found it hard to create clear opportunities in front of Muslera’s goal.
  • Maxi Pereira
    1
    1

    Maxi Pereira

Asked a lot of Suarez with a short pass as Uruguay looked to build down the right, then escaped a booking when felling Hulk. Showed great strength on more than one occasion to close out Oscar and Neymar.
  • Martín Cáceres
    2
    1

    Martín Cáceres

Seemed suited to the threat of Hulk coming inside rather than Oscar asking him questions on his weaker left. Got a vital header in from Neymar’s corner as both Brazilian centre-backs lurked in behind, but couldn’t prevent Paulinho from netting the winner moments later.
  • Cristian Rodríguez
    2
    1

    Cristian Rodríguez

Caught sleeping as Fred stole in to rob him of possession in the early moments, but then helped to form Uruguay’s solid core which had Brazil troubled. Gave as good as he got whenever he needed to in general play.
  • Egidio Arevalo Rios
    1
    1

    Egidio Arevalo Rios

Tackled with his heart and soul as much as his feet as is ever the case in order to ensure Brazil couldn’t play off their three attacking midfielders, providing a perfect shield for the defensive line which was eventually undone from a set-piece.
  • Alvaro Gonzalez
    0
    2

    Alvaro Gonzalez

Worked diligently as Uruguay got on top and stifled Brazil in the early exchanges. Shown a yellow card in the second half as he mistimed one challenge, but his positive effect helped to ensure Uruguay’s back four were well covered. Replaced by Gargano in the 83rd minute.
  • Luis Suárez
    0
    3

    Luis Suárez

His movement often had Brazil back-pedalling, and he made room for Cavani and Forlan to progress on more than one occasion. Missed a great opportunity to equalise soon after Fred’s opener.
  • Diego Forlán
    1
    1

    Diego Forlán

Saw his early penalty saved by Julio Cesar amidst a cacophony of jeers from the home crowd, then drove an effort just over as Uruguay had the better of the play. His magnificent free-kick delivery almost resulted in a goal for Suarez, while his corners were similarly dangerous throughout.
  • Edinson Cavani
    2
    1

    Edinson Cavani

Booked for grabbing at Neymar as the Brazilian superstar looked to make a move towards the Uruguay box. Looked set to continue his quiet tournament until he pounced on a loose ball to drive low past Julio Cesar, then made a great challenge on Marcelo in his own area before seeing a shot deflected just wide with Julio Cesar beaten.

Substitutions

  • Walter Gargano
    2
    1

    Walter Gargano

Came on for Gonzalez with seven minutes left of normal time. ----------------------- goal.com
