Sir Alex Ferguson picked up his final trophies, and admitted: “I’m glad it’s over.”
Fergie picked up both the League Managers' Assocation and Premier League Manager of the Year trophies on Monday night after his 13th title with the Old Trafford giants.
And the 71-year-old Scot, who declined to speak to the media on Sunday after his final game after 26 years as Manchester United boss ended in an astonishing 5-5 draw at West Brom, admitted he was happy to draw a veil over his remarkable career.
Ferguson said: “I’m glad it’s over. It’s hard work.
“The reaction at West Brom was overwhelming. They were fantastic and gave me a brilliant send-off.
“I think Steve Clarke should have got the award - anyone who gets five against United deserves it but they will always remember that game.”
In picking up his prizes at the LMA Annual Dinner in London, Fergie suggested he knew the key date when the trophy was won.
Asked when he thought the crown was bound for Old Trafford, Ferguson smiled as he referred to the day he signed £23million Robin Van Persie.
“Was it August 17?” asked Fergie.
“I did think the players were really focused. It’s about disappointment in adversity, the best recipe for success.
“If you’d seen our dressing room up at Sunderland when we lost the League to Manchester City [to a Sergio Aguero goal scored so late it came after United's match ended], you’d have had a good feeling about them.
"We were champions - for 10 seconds.
“I knew we had character in the team, experience and resolve. I thought we had a great chance.”
Ferguson was honoured as United’s youth team beat Spurs 3-2 to win the Premier League under-21 title.
He added: “We have always put a great emphasis on youth, From long before I came. Sir Matt Busby started it and he took United into Europe. It’s been a matter of trying to maintain it.”
Cardiff boss Malky Mackay was named the Championship manager of the season after winning the title. Yeovil's play-off winner Gary Johnson got the League One award and Gillingham's Martin Allen the League Two gong after their promotion to the third tier.
Roberto di Matteo was given a special merit award for taking Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup glory last season, and Bradford's Phil Parkinson got one for taking the League Two side to the Capital One Cup final and also winning promotion via the play-offs.
Wigan's Roberto Martinez won the Budweiser FA Cup manager of the season award.
