Pirelli to test new tyres for ‘safety’ ahead of Canadian Grand Prix

Pirelli to test new tyres for ‘safety’ ahead of Canadian Grand Prix

Pirelli to test new tyres for ‘safety’ ahead of Canadian Grand Prix London: Amid the tyre troubles faced by Formula One teams before and during the Monaco Grand Prix, tyremakers Pirelli are set to test new experimental tyres during practice in Montreal in June ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix in a bid to make them safer.

The announcement of planned testing comes after revelations that Mercedes and Pirelli are facing punishment from the FIA for having conducted a secret tyre testing session following the Spanish Grand Prix.

According to Pirelli, the aim of introducing the new tyre is to prevent any
instances of the tread detaching itself from the structure although the performance and wear characteristics of the new tyre will not be changed in order to keep up the spectacle and retain a strategic element to all the races.

The Italian tyre manufacturer is also hoping that the new tyre will lead to an average of two pit stops per race as opposed to the four stops per driver in the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this month.

Pirelli has confirmed that the new tyres in medium compound will be the only ones to be tested and put on trial during Montreal practice, adding that the medium and supersoft tyres for the race will remain unaltered as per the current specifications.

Pirelli will replace the steel belts with synthetic fibre Kevlar following its failure mechanisms where the tread had disintegrated and separated itself from the belt of the tyre as it happened with Mercedes`` Lewis Hamilton and Force India` s Paul Di Resta.
