Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea
David Moyes's first home game as the new Old Trafford manager ended in a tepid goalless draw as Wayne Rooney was given raucous support by both sets of supporters
By Wayne Veysey at Old Trafford
-
179David de Gea
Dealt comfortably with Chelsea's long-range shooting and looks an increasingly confident figure in in the United goal. -
119Patrice Evra
Sold in defence and threatening on the overlap. Looks a reborn figure at left-back. -
106Phil Jones
Wholehearted display at right-back. Threw himself into every tackle and header, although his attacking raids were not as frequent as expected. -
1211Rio Ferdinand
Probably could not believe his luck that he did not have to mark an out-and-out centre forward. His communication with Vidic was good enough to minimise alarms. -
115Nemanja Vidic
Was left for dead by Schurrle's pace on one occasion but dealt comfortably with Chelsea's posse of attacking midfielders. Removed the ball with the minimum of fuss from Oscar in the 48th minute and made a string of key interceptions. -
96Michael Carrick
Showed how much United will rely on him this season with a canny display in front of the back four. Did not allow Chelsea's attacking midfielders time or space. -
212Tom Cleverley
Steady rather than particularly effective. Took the easy option too often as the weight of the occasion appeared to curb his ambition. -
519Antonio Valencia Flop of the Match
Lacked conviction and his final ball was disappointing. Replaced by Young after 65 minutes. -
356Wayne Rooney Top of the Match
Welcomed back like a prodigal son, with his name frequently and, perhaps uniquely, chanted by both sets of supporters. Looked eager, his work-rate was excellent and some of his second-half passing was top-drawer. -
411Danny Welbeck
Got the nod to start on the left flank ahead of Giggs but looked more effective when he wandered into central areas. Sent two shots wildly over the bar early in the second half. Subbed with 12 minutes left. -
811Robin van Persie
Fizzed with energy and menace but the chances did not fall his way. Shot into the side netting from a tight angle early on before sending a tricky header over the bar.
Substitutions
-
26Ryan Giggs
Quiet cameo on the left flank. -
117Ashley Young
His crossing from the right was more productive than Valencia's had been.
-
122Petr Cech
Would have expected to be more involved in such a demanding away fixture. Only had one save to make in the first 70 minutes and dealt comfortably with every high ball and long-range effort. -
143Branislav Ivanovic
Chelsea's Mr Dependable was as solid as ever, drawing the sting from Welbeck and keeping Giggs quiet late on. -
123Ashley Cole
Booked in the 15th minute for a mistimed tackle on van Persie but it did not unsettle the experienced left-back. Made the most of a penalty claim in the second half when he was tugged back by Jones. -
104Gary Cahill
Dominant in the air but occasionally his positioning let him down. -
124John Terry
Both sides of Terry were on view; the outstanding reader of the game and the plodder whose lack of recovery pace is glaringly obvious. -
59Ramires
No Makelele but his versatility and energy never cease to impress. -
75Frank Lampard
Anchored the midfield steadily on a night when he was clearly under strict instructions to keep his position and not bomb forward. -
87Oscar
Dropped very deep at times to instigate attacks as Mourinho showed how much faith he has in the No.11 to orchestrate the play. Had Chelsea's two best first-half chances but both were dealt comfortably with by De Gea. -
97Kevin De Bruyne
Looks like he will not be in need of a razor any time soon but still managed to cut his face after clattering into Van Persie in the first half to earn himself a yellow. Otherwise, did little of note and was replaced by Torres after an hour. -
112Eden Hazard
Looks to have noticeably bulked up this season but an otherwise anonymous display from the Belgian. -
104Andre Schürrle
Surprisingly given the task of leading the line, the German was too isolated although he demonstrated a stunning burst of pace. Moved out to the right flank before he was subbed shortly before the end.
Substitutions
-
71César Azpilicueta
Replace Hazard in added time. -
3911John Obi Mikel
Helped Chelsea protect their point for the last four minutes. -
89Fernando Torres
Had a few good runs but his threat diminished the closer he got to the penalty box. ------------------------- goal.com
