Wayne Rooney has preserved a multi-million loyalty bonus by not hitting Manchester United with a formal transfer request.
Under the terms of his £250,000-a-week contract, the striker is entitled to a loyalty payment if he does not ask a move over the length of the deal.
Common practice in player contract negotiations these days, Rooney’s loyalty bonus is understood to be in the region of £2.5million.
The money is paid in installments over the duration of a player’s contract but cease if he asks to go - something Rooney stopped short of, despite his disillusion at the champions.
The England star ended months of uncertainty when it was revealed he had decided not to make a formal request to leave.
Jose Mourinho had called on the player to declare publicly whether he wanted to stay at United or take up the offer of a move to Chelsea, who had two bids turned down.
The Blues were poised to make a third bid of around £40m but Rooney’s decision not to table a transfer request looks to have ended their interest.
Rooney started healing his rift with United on Wednesday night by thanking fans for their support this week.
The England striker earned a remarkable reception at Old Trafford on Monday when he was the champions' star man against Mourinho’s team.
And Rooney wrote on Facebook: “It was an unbelievable reaction from the fans, so thank you. I really appreciate your support. It means a lot.”
Mourinho admitted after the match that the reception the fans gave the player meant he was likely to end his pursuit of him.
The last time Rooney threatened to leave United, back in October 2010, he was rewarded with a new five-year deal worth £250,000-a-week.
And the 27-year-old is set for another bumper pay-out with his loyalty bonus.
Team-mate Danny Welbeck is relishing Sunday’s lunchtime showdown with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield - and looking forward to a shoot-out against their in-form striker Daniel Sturridge.
“I was with Sturridge at a Nike event and we were speaking about our goals, so I’m looking forward to playing against him at Anfield,” said Welbeck. “I can’t wait for the game.
“Ever since I’ve been at the club, coming through the Under-9s, to 15s, 16s, youth team and reserves; no matter what the situation is, it’s massive.
“Obviously we’ll want to go there and win but it’s going to be another intense game.”
Welbeck admitted United’s players were disappointed not to claim all three points in Monday’s 0-0 draw with title rivals Chelsea.
“There was a bit of disappointment because we really want to be winning our home games,” he said.
“But in this league every point is hard to get. Their aim was to keep the goals out and they did that. It was a really tough match and both sides did well.
“It was just a shame that it came two games in – further into the season it would have been a bigger occasion.”
