Tiger Woods made an uncertain start to his
US Open campaign after appearing to injure his left wrist when he hacked
his approach shot from the deep rough on the first hole of the Merion
Golf Club.
The world's number player one made four bogeys and two birdies
during the first 10 holes of his round, but elected against making a
three-foot putt for par on the 11th in the fading light on the stormy
Philadelphia course.
The 14-time major champion winced in pain after playing from the rough on the fifth, although he played down the apparent injury during a short interview on Thursday.
"I've got a lot of holes to play, and hopefully I can play a little better than I did today," the American said.
"It's going to be a fast night.
Nevertheless, Woods refused to blame the stop-start nature of the round for losing six shots to leader Luke Donald.
"It's kind of the way the tour has been this year," he added.
"We've had a lot of bad weather this year and this is the way it has been." ------------------- GOLF365
