Golovkin: I want to fight Canelo

Golovkin: I want to fight Canelo

saul alvarez gennady golovkin By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) made it clear in an interview that he’s very interested in facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in the near future at some point.
Golovkin said to esnewsporting.com “I think it’s [Canelo vs. Golovkin] a great fight. I want this fight. I think Canelo’s going to go to 160 after Mayweather fight.”
Golovkin didn’t say whether he’d still be interested in facing Canelo if he gets beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14th.
I don’t think it would even be a point of discussion because Golovkin likely wouldn’t want to fight a guy that was just beaten, and Golden Boy Promotions wouldn’t likely allow Canelo to fight Golovkin if Canelo were coming off of a loss to Mayweather. I don’t think Golden Boy will allow Canelo to fight Golovkin even if Canelo were to beat Mayweather. Even if Golovkin said he’d come down to 154, I don’t see Golden Boy saying yes to a Canelo-Golovkin fight because Golovkin hits too hard, and Canelo wouldn’t have a big weight advantage like he’s been having against the welterweights that Golden Boy keeps matching him up against for some reason.
Golovkin sounded hopeful that Canelo would move up to 160 to fight him. I really can’t see that happening. I think Canelo and/or Golden Boy would make it so that Golovkin would have to come down to 154 to take the fight. It wouldn’t matter because Golovkin looks like he weighs less than Canelo, so making 154 wouldn’t be a problem for Golovkin. He’d make the weight if the fight were offered to him. Canelo isn’t going to be moving up to 160 either. Oscar De La Hoya already said that Canelo will keep fighting at junior middleweight for a long time to come.
If Canelo moves to 160, it’ll make it harder for Golden Boy to match him against welterweights.
I think Golovkin would be too strong for Canelo and way too talented. It would be a really tough fight for the 22-year-old Canelo because he’s so easy to hit, and if Golovkin is tagging him with shots, he’s going to have a good chance of hurting Canelo and exposing him.
Like I said, I don’t see Golden Boy saying yes to the fight. I doubt that Canelo would push them to make the fight with Golovkin. Instead, we’d like see Canelo trying to get Golden Boy to set up a fight against past his best fighter Miguel Cotto.
Golovkin faces Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) this month on June 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. Golovkin says that WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella recently told him that he can get a fight against Martinez if he beats Macklin this month.
If Dibella is serious about that then we could see Golovkin vs. Sergio Martinez later on this year. ---------------------- boxing news 24
