Player Ratings: Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid

Goal.com was on hand to judge all the performers as Lewandowski struck four times in Germany to put the hosts firmly in the driving seat

By Robin Bairner

  • Roman Weidenfeller
    503
    22

    Roman Weidenfeller

Left helpless as Madrid scored the equalising goal late in the first half from a slack defensive error. Was rarely troubled but did well to stifle a dangerous Khedira cross that might have brought Madrid back into the tie. Did well to deny Ronaldo late on.
  • Neven Subotic
    457
    34

    Neven Subotic

Played a strong match defensively as he was not caught out of position and was extremely positive in his challenges. Competed particularly well in the air when challenged by Ronaldo from set pieces.
  • Mats Hummels
    305
    264

    Mats Hummels

A stray first-half pass opened the door for Madrid but the centre-back was lucky as the visitors failed to take full advantage. Was not let off a second time as his short back pass was responsible for the Madrid leveller. Did well not to let this error get to him and played a superb second half.
  • Lukasz Piszczek
    586
    28

    Lukasz Piszczek

A very effective performance in the full-back role, where he closed down his opposite number quickly and effectively. Like his team-mates, he was phenomenally industrious when his side were not in possession. Went off in the closing stages.
  • Marcel Schmelzer
    393
    29

    Marcel Schmelzer

The left-back played a strong game in the Dortmund defence. Refused to let a white shirt run in behind him to take possession and was measured in his offensive approach in this encounter.
  • Sven Bender
    385
    31

    Sven Bender

Battled impressively in the centre of the field, where his strength and energy were to the fore. Overshadowed by the omnipresent Gundogan but his performance was still of a high standard.
  • Ilkay Gündogan
    688
    30

    Ilkay Gündogan

It was his well-weighted pass to Gotze that was the real catalyst to the opening goal. Was extremely impressive as a pivot as he was ever available to receive possession, which was inevitably used in a sensible manner. Nearly scored a stunning fourth after beating two players. A truly indefatigable display.
  • Mario Götze
    568
    112

    Mario Götze

His summer move to Bayern Munich may have been announced on Tuesday but his performance in this clash was not diminished in any way. Delivered a stunning cross for Lewandowski to score the opening goal. Was superb throughout.
  • Jakub Blaszczykowski
    564
    38

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Made his first real contribution of the evening after half an hour when he broke past Coentrao to create a goalscoring opportunity. The least effective of Dortmund’s front four, though the standards were exceptionally high. Withdrawn in the last 10 minutes.
  • Robert Lewandowski
    1600
    55

Robert Lewandowski Top of the Match

A truly outstanding display of goalscoring. Struck after only seven minutes to give Dortmund the perfect start to the game. He was a threat in the box throughout and grabbed his second with a terrific predatory finish soon after the restart. His third was the best of the evening as he controlled brilliantly before lashing into the net. Scoring his fourth from the penalty spot was inevitable.
  • Marco Reus
    755
    35

    Marco Reus

Typified the start to the game the Germans made with a piercing run through the centre of the Madrid defence followed by a purposeful shot on target that needed some saving. Made several such bursts in an effervescent performance and won the penalty that put the game – and perhaps the tie – out of Madrid’s reach.

Substitutions

  • Sebastian Kehl
    206
    30

    Sebastian Kehl

The club captain was introduced in the last 10 minutes.
  • Kevin Großkreutz
    200
    25

    Kevin Großkreutz

Given the final few minutes of the match.
  • Julian Schieber
    189
    40

    Julian Schieber

    Played stoppage time only.
  • Diego López Rodríguez
    293
    221

    Diego López Rodríguez

Was rendered pointless by Lewandowki’s incredible finishing as he had not chance for any of the goals. Made a terrific save from Gundogan in the second period and at least denied the Pole a fifth with a flying parry.
  • Raphaël Varane
    123
    402

    Raphaël Varane

Perhaps lucky not to concede a penalty on Reus late in the first half and was caught ball watching just a shade as Dortmund added their second, spoiling what otherwise would have been a decent performance.
  • Pepe
    78
    724

    Pepe Flop of the Match

Guilty of being too busy grappling with Lewandowski to mark him properly as the Pole stretched to open the scoring early on. Completely failed to contain the threat of the striker, who found a yard against the Portuguese to smash home his third.
  • Sergio Ramos
    84
    435

    Sergio Ramos

Did not have a great start to the match as Gotze crossed from his flank to create the opening goal, though the Madrid captain recovered well until the break. At times he was prone to leaping to vigorously into challenges and was booked late on.
  • Fabio Coentrao
    144
    319

    Fabio Coentrao

Made a key interception to prevent a dangerous ball picking a route to Blaszczykowski only to be comprehensively beaten by the Pole later in the game. He was also the more adventurous of the two Madrid full-backs, though his passing was occasionally rather fraught.
  • Sami Khedira
    166
    327

    Sami Khedira

Played well during the second part of the first half but the German was up against a strong Dortmund midfield and although his effort could not be faulted, the BVB midfield pairing had the edge. Booked in the second half.
  • Mesut Özil
    144
    463

    Mesut Özil

On his return to Germany he would have been eager to make a positive impression yet his influence on the game was peripheral in the extreme. Was nullified by the industry of the Dortmund midfield and was booked after the break.
  • Xabi Alonso
    91
    411

    Xabi Alonso

After seemingly being overwhelmed in the opening minutes of the game, the experienced Spain international took a firm grip on the game and was a key figure as the visitors finally got a foothold in proceedings. Faded again in the second half and gave away a penalty with a clumsy foul.
  • Luka Modric
    176
    388

    Luka Modric

Introduced into the side in place of Di Maria, the creative midfielder played some wonderful passes around the Dortmund box but struggled to find the room to have a consistently telling influence.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    382
    446

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Madrid’s talisman was more subdued than usual by the energetic Dortmund defence, though he was still on hand to tap in the levelling goal at the end of the first half, allowing the Portuguese to score in a record-equalling six-successive Champions League match. Ronaldo was, however, cast into the shadows in this clash.
  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    118
    430

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Showed his teamwork by making a potentially goal-saving challenge on Blaszczykowski half an hour into the match. This ethic was more emphatically rewarded late in the first half as he pounced on a short pass before unselfishly setting up Ronaldo. For all his industry, though, he failed to get involved regularly enough.

Substitutions

  • Kaká
    262
    219

    Kaká

Given only 10 minutes at the end.
  • Ángel Di María
    91
    334

    Ángel Di María

Given the last quarter of the game, he rarely registered a touch.
  • Karim Benzema
    117
    286

    Karim Benzema

Replaced Higuain midway through the second period but had little more influence than the Argentine. ----------------- goal.com

  1. The subsequent time I learn a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one.

I imply, I do know it was my option to read, but I

actually thought youd have something attention-grabbing to say.
    All I

hear is a bunch of whining about one thing that you can repair in case you werent too busy in search
    of attention.

Look into my weblog; o'que é tratado de madrid
