Emmanuel Adebayor has told Spurs he will not be forced out of the club.
The north Londoners will step up their bid to bring in a top-line replacement at the end of the season - regardless of where they finish.
Adebayor was left out of the club's 2-2 draw at Wigan on Saturday but he is NOT injured.
Tottenham could struggle to offload the marksman, however, as it is believed the Togo striker will only leave White Hart Lane for a club willing to match his £100,000-a-week wages.
It is a similar scenario to the one which stalled negotiations over his departure from Manchester City to Spurs.
Nonetheless, Spurs remain intent on moving Adebayor on and are set to sound out suitors in China, Russia, the MLS and even the United Arab Emirates, as they seek to find a club able to meet the player's wage demands.
While Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas fought personally to persuade chairman Daniel Levy to hand Jermain Defoe a new deal last year, Adebayor is not in his plans beyond this season.
Levy is understood to be ready to back AVB to revamp the Tottenham frontline with a replacement - plus another striker - in this summer's transfer window.
Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, Braga's Portuguese forward Eder and QPR hitman Loic Remy are among the players high on the Spurs shortlist.
The club's interest in long-time target Leandro Damiao of Internacional is being rivalled by Italian outfit Napoli.
Adebayor was a Levy signing, brought to the club during the reign of Harry Redknapp.
Last season, during his loan spell from Manchester City, the big frontman showed an impressive appetite to net 18 goals and help the club into the top four last season.
However this season - the first of a four-year permanent deal - Adebayor scored just six goals from 29 Premier League and Europa League appearances.
He has also been accused by fans of a lack of commitment and clashed with Villas Boas early in this campaign over having to sit on the bench behind Defoe.
Ironically now, AVB and his staff are now satisfied with Adebayor's work-rate during matches - he scored twice in the three games Defoe missed recently with a pelvic injury - but the club are still looking at alternatives.
