Voller: Kiessling showed lots of character

The 29-year-old put the controversy of his 'phantom goal' behind him to score twice in the win over the Ukranians, much to the delight of the Bayer Leverkusen sporting director

Bayer Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Voller has praised the character of striker Stefan Kiessling in the 4-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

The German marksman bagged a double in the emphatic victory over the Ukrainian giants, with Sidney Sam and Simon Rolfes also among the goalscorers.

The 29-year-old has endured a mixed time of it recently, having come in for some criticism for failing to own up to his 'phantom goal' against Hoffenheim on Friday, but Voller believes Wednesday's display was the perfect riposte to his detractors of recent days.

"I was very happy for Stefan. The last few days have been very difficult for him and he was confronted with a lot from all angles," the 53-year-old told Sky Deutschland.

"But he is a tough guy and handled the situation well. He showed a lot of character."

Victory over the Eastern Europeans means that Leverkusen extended their seven-game unbeaten run at home in Europe's elite competition.
