Arsenal vs Chelsea RECAP: Relive the action as Mourinho retains unbeaten record against Wenger

Arsenal vs Chelsea RECAP: Relive the action as Mourinho retains unbeaten record against Wenger

It was all about the action in the dugouts as Wenger and Mourinho rekindled their rivalry, but Arsenal's kids were no match for Chelsea's stars
9:55 pm
Final scores in the Capital One Cup:
  • Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea.
  • Manchester United 4-0 Norwich.
  • Birmingham 4-4 Stoke (Stoke win 4-2 on penalties)
  • Burnley 0-2 West Ham.
  • Leicester 4-3 Fulham.
9:40 pm
Goalflash: Time to put Norwich out of their misery surely? It's Manchester United 4-0 Norwich, thanks to Fabio.
West Ham are now 2-0 up against Burnley thanks to another penalty from Taylor.
9:37 pm
That's it. Full time at the Emirates. Arsene Wenger still yet to beat Jose Mourinho in a competitive match.
Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea, goals courtesy of Azpilicueta and Juan Mata. The Gunners will just have to concentrate on the league, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
In other news the Manchester United game has 11 minutes of extra time after an injury to Norwich's Robert Snodgrass.
That means Moyes has outdone Fergie-time then.
9:35 pm
Chelsea sub: Juan Mata comes off, Tomas Kalas comes on.
Goalflash: Phil Jones puts Man United even further in front, it's Manchester United 3-0 Norwich.
9:34 pm
GOALFLASH: The match between Leicester and Fulham is incredible. Leicester have gone ahead once again, it's Leicester 4-3 Fulham (Dyer).
9:32 pm
Santi Cazorla fires just wide for Arsenal, in a shot whipped across the box to Schwarzer's left.
It looks like it could be Arsenal's last real effort in this match, Chelsea are beginning to pass it around the back four.
Oh wait, Chelsea are now on the attack again, Ramires shoots from 25 years out and it goes just over the bar.
9:31 pm
Goalflash: Birmingham are brumming up the rear (geddit) but they've managed to pull one back, it's Birmingham 2-3 Stoke.
Zaha is subbed for Rooney in Man United's match against Norwich, the winger has been in the shadow of Januzaj all game.
Goalflash: Leicester 3-3 Fulham, Karagounis has levelled for Fulham.
9:26 pm
Time is ticking for Arsenal, and it looks like they're going to struggle to get anything out of this now.
Chelsea still have a decent share of position, and Demba Ba has come on like a greyhound in hope of impressing Mouinho, he is trying to get the better of the Arsenal defence.
They're response is to foul him, delaying the action even further.
From the free-kick, Chelsea work a decent effort and Ba goes close. But the star of the show today has been Michael Essien, who has been rock solid in the Chelsea midfield and looks like a man who has been playing first-team football all season.
9:24 pm
Goalflash: West Ham have scored a goal. Incredible scenes. That makes it Burnley 0-1 West Ham.
Matty Taylor scores a penalty for the visitors.
9:22 pm
CRAMP ATTACK: Almost every single Chelsea player has cramp at the moment, which definitely has nothing to do with running down the clock, it's cramping Arsenal's style though.
Demba Ba comes on for Samuel Eto'o, who has cramp. Really bad cramp.
He takes seven years to walk off the pitch.
9:17 pm
Manchester United vs Norwich will be a late finish. Match was stopped almost 10 minutes by an injury to Snodgrass.
Goalflash: It's over in Birmingham, Arnautovic scores for Stoke to make it Birmingham 1-3 Stoke.
And in Arsenal v Chelsea, the Chelsea fans are currently singing: "Oh, Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay."
9:11 pm
Arsenal sub: Giroud on, Bendtner off.
It wasn't a brilliant effort from Bendtner, he didn't look like a man who is trying to win a place on the first-team.
Chelsea sub: Ramires on, De Bruyne.
9:08 pm
The answer to that last question is "no!"
Juan Mata blasts home a beautiful goal from 18-yards out with the outside of his right boot, it curves outwards and away from Fabianski and stings the back of the net.
Score: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea (Azpilicueta, Mata).
9:06 pm
Arsenal sub: Ozil on, Miyaichi off.
That's wide-man Ryo Miyaichi off for the Gunners then, which presumably means that Cazorla will go out on the wing and Ozil will play centrally to act as playmaker.
We were two and a half minutes off when it came to predicting what time Ozil would come on, but close enough.
Can he turn the game around Arsenal?
9:05 pm
Recap 61st minute:Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea.
The Gunners are still trailing at the Emirates with 30 minutes to go. Ramsey is trying to rally the troops, but he's given up on passing it to Bendtner and is now just shooting from 20-30 yards out.
He just came close, but Schwarzer is yet to be properly tested in the Chelsea goal.
This is what it looks like when Cesar 'Dave' Azpilicueta scores for Chelsea against Arsenal.

8:59 pm
Goalflash: Rodallega gets a quick goal back from Fulham. It's Leicester 3-2 Fulham.
Manchester United 2-0 Norwich, Hernandez gets another goal, will Moyes pick him this weekend?
Stoke are back in front courtesy of Crouch, who, as we previously mentioned, is also playing for Arsenal tonight:
8:57 pm
GOAL FOR ARSENAL'S MIQUEL... who is on loan at Leicester.
He makes it Leicester 3-1 Fulham.
8:55 pm
Arsenal are knocking on the door now, Ramsey has given is team a kick up the backside.
They sustain pressure in Chelsea's final third for around a minute before Bendtner plays a poor pass back to Ramsey and it all breaks down.
The Arsenal midfielders might have to do this without the help of Bendtner.
8:49 pm
AND WE'RE OFF, again!
Our Capital One Cup matches have kicked off. Arsenal are looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Chelsea who are looking calm and strong in the middle of the park.
We predict Ozil and Giroud to come on in the 60th minute if it hasn't turned around by then.
But Chelsea have a brilliant habit of being able to kill any Arsenal momentum in this game by taking all the pace out of it. They are very comfortable on the ball whereas Arsenal are fast and frantic, probably too frantic.
8:36 pm
STAT ATTACK:
It's the first league cup game since 1980 between Man United and Norwich.
Man United have never beaten Norwich in the league cup, it looks like they're on course to overturn that tonight.
8:33 pm
Half-time in tonight's Capital One Cup fixtures, here are the latest scores:
  • Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea.
  • Manchester United 1-0 Norwich.
  • Leicester 2-1 Fulham.
  • Birmingham 1-1 Stoke.
  • Burnley 0-0 West Ham.
8:31 pm
Goalflash: Leicester 1-1 Fulham, Morgan is the scorer (Captain Morgan, obviously).
In the meantime, I made this. Nacho Monreal and Peter Crouch separated at birth:
Monreal and Crouch: Separated at birth

8:23 pm
This game has turned around dramatically since Chelsea's goal. It looks like they're taking the pace out of the game, they're happy in possession right now and are keeping the ball.
It's classic cup-tie Mourinho to be honest. The back four kick it around for a few seconds, and then the well-organised Chelsea midfield launches an attack, it's not sustained pressure but it will be frustrating Arsenal.
The Arsenal midfield has lost its shape since conceding, lacking composure. With possession of the ball they are quick to attack, accurate with their passing, but when they're trying to defend or win the ball back they're not having much luck in the middle of the park.
Arsenal fans, here's a picture of your new panto villain:

8:17 pm
Arsene Wenger is SO furious that he's dropped the lid off his bottle of water. He's shuffling left on his seat, then he shuffles right.
Is this the start of Mourinho vs Wenger - round two?
8:16 pm
Michael Essien is bleeding, people. Michael Essien is BLEEDING!
Let's hope he's okay, because he's playing a blinder at the moment and it's great to see him back in action.
In other news...
Goalflash: Birmingham 1-1 Stoke City, Adeyemi scores from Brum.
8:11 pm
GOAL: Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea.
Azpilicueta capitalises on an awful error from Jenkinson and Koscielny.
Jenkinson heads the ball back to Fabianski but the Chelsea defender leaps on it, nobody knows what he was doing that far up the pitch.
8:08 pm
Goalflash: Leicester 0-1 Fulham.
Rodallega scores for Fulham.
Goalflash: Man United 1-0 Norwich.
Hernandez scores from the penalty spot after a soft tackle on Januzaj. Debatable penalty.
8:06 pm
Bendtner's hair is probably the most interesting thing about him so far in this match. He just got fouled by David Luiz gifting a free-kick to the Gunners in a decent area.
But the ball sails straight over the defenders and lands in the hands of Schwarzer, who is not only grateful to catch it, but grateful to be playing football.
Essien and Mikel still look in control when Chelsea are in possession. Chelsea haven't had as much of the ball as Arsenal so far in this game, and Eto'o's only chances have come from balls being swung in from out wide.
8:03 pm
Arsenal are still trying to pass their way through the Chelsea defence, but the Blues are stacking 10 men behind the ball and the organisation from Chelsea is too much for the Gunners at this point.
Perhaps as the match goes on Chelsea's defensive organisation will begin to wane, but the defensive midfield of Essien and Mikel is working well at the moment.
Willian and Mata also tracking back well and making some important tackles.
Cazorla and Wilshere are the stand-out players so far for Arsenal.
7:59 pm
Essien wants to prove his worth in this one! He goes on a storming 20-yard-run, I didn't know he could move that fast.
Looks like he could actually be the key for Chelsea in the middle of the park, acting as the initial playmaker when his side are in possession.
7:57 pm
Goalflash: Birmingham 0-1 Stoke.
Stoke ahead at Birmingham after a screamer from Assaidi from 25-30 yards. Great goal.
10 minutes gone in Arsenal v Chelsea, both sides scrapping for possession and control of the game.
Very even so far, but the Gunners midfield is starting to take shape and thread some great passes together. Chelsea seem to be backing themselves into a corner every time they go on the attack.
7:54 pm
The pace of this match is slow early-on.
Not as slow as Nicklas Bendtner, who looks like a man who hasn't seen a football in about four months.
He'll warm up though, hopefully. If not, Aaron Ramsey could always step up to the plate again and add to his nine goals this season.
Bendtner attempts an audacious volley from 20-yards-out but it's blocked.
This is a very cool affair at the moment, needs some pace.
7:51 pm
Ryo Miyaichi shows some pace early on, he beats Bertrand and cuts a ball in from close to the corner flag. He could be key today getting in behind the experienced Chelsea defence.
David Luiz, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta and Bertrand is a decent back four, and even though Eto'o hasn't set the Premier League alight this season, you do fancy him to grab a goal tonight in response to Torres efforts at the weekend.
7:45 pm
HERE WE GO, kick-off.
This game is all about the midfield battles. Wilshere, Ramsey and Rosicky will take on Mata, Willian and De Bruyne.
The experienced head of Essien may also count for a lot tonight in a game in which the average age is 10-years-old.
BIG hand shake and a hug between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. They love each other really.
7:36 pm
Tonight we'll also be bringing updates on the other matches going on in the Capital One Cup.
Manchester United are taking on Norwich, Burnley are hoping confident of a win against West Ham, Leicester play Fulham and Stoke take on Birmingham.
There are a couple of relatively unknown Arsenal players on the team sheet tonight, here's a bit of background:
Ryo Miyaichi
Scott Heavey
Ryo Miyaichi: Japanese Winger signed for free in 2011 from Slyphid FC – has been loaned to Bolton and Wigan.
Isaac Hayden: Chelmsford born. 18-year-old centre back,ot yet appeared for Arsenal.
7:19 pm
Team news is in.
Arsenal: Fabianski, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Monreal, Ramsey, Wilshere, Rosicky, Cazorla, Ryo, Bendtner.
Chelsea: Schwarzer; Azpilicueta, Cahill, D Luiz, Bertrand; Essien (c), Mikel; De Bruyne, Mata, Willian; Eto’o.
Arsenal subs: Viviano, Sagna, Hayden, Yennaris, Ozil, Giroud, Park.
Chelsea Subs: Blackman, Ivanovic, Kalas, Ramires, Hazard, Torres, Ba.
What do we make of that then? Some big players on the bench for both sides. Mata and Willian could be a sign of intent from Chelsea, and the inclusion of Wilshere is a surprise for Arsenal.
Cazorla wasn't thought to be starting either.
6:46 pm
Here we go, this is the rekindling of one of the biggest rivalries in the history of English football. No, not Arsenal vs Chelsea, we're talking Arsene Wenger vs Jose Mourinho.
Arsenal are fielding a side worth about 70p (actually £30m), and Chelsea are expected to field a side worth around £130m, it has been termed the "Mis-Match of the Day".
Who termed it that? Er, us.
But it's still expected to be a close one, Arsene Wenger will not want to lose to Chelsea, even if his choice of starting line-up suggests that he is resting key players and focusing on the Premier League and the Champions League, which resumes next week.
Wenger has never beaten Mourinho in a competitive match, and Mourinho previously produced a 'dossier' on all the mean and nasty things that Wenger had said about Chelsea.
If this match promises anything, it's the potential of drama and hilarity. Stay with us, if there's one thing we love, it's drama and hilarity.
Two things.
