Tottenham have been urged to unleash wingers Andros Townsend and Aaron Lennon TOGETHER by the star wide-men of the club’s Double-winning team.
Townsend will be back on club duty this weekend after his stunning performances helped England qualify for the World Cup finals.
Lennon is also set to return for the White Hart Lane side following a foot injury that's kept him out since August.
However, while both are now England internationals, neither is guaranteed a place in Andre Villas-Boas’ side at Aston Villa on Sunday.
Cliff Jones and Terry Dyson, who played together in the north Londoners' legendary 1961 team, said Townsend and Lennon could be used in tandem to terrorise defences.
Jones said: “Townsend is a bit special. His performances for England have put him on the world stage.
“The challenge for him now is to come back to Spurs and show that form week in, week out.
“I am a fan of Lennon - he is a terrific player when he is fit. He has got pace - defenders never like facing pace.
“Lennon on one side, Townsend, who is a left footer, on the other side. Why not play them together? It would be terrific.
“They have all got the chance to play themselves into the England squad to play in [the World Cup in] Brazil. What an experience that will be.”
Dyson, who scored twice in the 1963 Cup-Winners’ Cup final, added: “Let the defenders defend. Their job is to stop them scoring.
“Townsend is exciting. He makes things happen. Other players are just happy to knock the ball off all the time. He will go at people.
“Now he has got to do it consistently because he is not guaranteed a place in the Spurs side.”
Jones reckons Townsend can replace the departed Gareth Bale in the affections of Tottenham fans:
“He is the type of player who gets players out of their seats - there is an expectancy when he picks the ball up. It was the same with Gareth Bale last season.
“But I would say Townsend is similar to how I played. He has pace and likes to cut in from the wing. I can see him moving to outside left. I think he would be great.”
Jones, who won 59 Wales caps, can see parallels between the current team and his generation.
“We had three key players in our side - John White, Dave Mackay and Danny Blanchflower,” he recalled. “If they played well, the rest of the side played well.
“I can see Spurs having certain players like that now.
“I like Dembele. I love Sandro - I see him very similar to Mackay. I am still a big fan of Dawson. He is a leader. He gets stuck in.
“I think it is just a matter of AVB getting them all gelled together. We have got to be in that top four - it has got to be the ambition this year.”
The two legends were speaking to promote a new DVD of the 1963 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final which will be released next month.
Tottenham beat Atletico Madrid, 5-1, becoming the first English club to win a European trophy.
