Joey Barton has blamed the Roy Hodgson space monkey joke row on whoever leaked the story in the first place.
The QPR midfielder said that a "snake in the camp" is to blame for the fallout from Tuesday night's half-time team-talk - not the England boss.
Hodgson became embroiled in a bizarre row over his half-time team talk during England's 2-0 win over Poland that earned them a place in the World Cup 2014 tournament in Brazil.
He made a joke involving space monkeys which was used to illustrate a basic point on Chris Smalling giving more of the ball to Andros Townsend.
But at least one player is believed to have thought the comment had racial overtones.
However, Townsend has since confirmed that no offence was intended or taken, while FA chairman Greg Dyke has given Hodgson his full backing.
But Barton tweeted: "I'm more worried about the player that leaked it to the journalist. To have a snake in the camp, is more worrying.
"What goes on behind closed doors should stay there IMO. Especially with crap like this. How does that (non)story help anyone?"
