Reus: Full-throttle football not to blame for Dortmund's injury issues

The German midfielder returned to light training with Dortmund this week but will remain sidelined for the weekend against Hannover

Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus has admitted his frustration at being forced to withdraw from the Germany squad but says BVB's style of play is nothing to do with the club's injury issues.

The 24-year old suffered a tear to his medial collateral ligament in his left ankle during Dortmund's first league defeat of the season at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach, and had to watch from the stands as his international team-mates secured their place at next summer's World Cup with wins over Republic of Ireland and Sweden.

Dortmund's injury issues do not end with Reus, though, as first team regulars Marcel Schmelzer, Ilkay Gundogan, Nuri Sahin, Sebastian Kehl and Sven Bender, as well as Jonas Hofmann, remain sidelined, but Reus is adamant that their aggressive style of play is not the cause of their misfortune.

"This way of playing has made us successful," Reus told Ruhr Nachrichten. "We love it, and in the past it was not the problem.

"Injuries are a part of sport, i
t's bad luck, but it happens sometimes."

Dortmund have struggled in their attempts to break down stubborn opposition defences this season, resulting in the recent defeat to Monchengladbach, but Reus insists they deserved more.

"In Gladbach, we didn't do much wrong," he said. "Our counter-pressing was outstanding, but we couldn't score the goals."

Dortmund resume their Bundesliga campaign against Hannover this weekend at Signal Iduna Park, but Reus is unlikely to feature. ------------------ goal.com
