Failing to replace Peter Schmeichel with an adequate first-choice keeper for six years was Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest regret.
After Schmeichel left following United’s Treble glory in 1999, Ferguson signed seven potential replacements in addition to Raimond van der Gouw and Paul Rachubka.
The list now looks incredible, with Fergie recalling the first of those signings, Aussie Mark Bosnich, "turned up three hours late for the first day of training’’.
The Scot also tried jinxed Massimo Taibi, Fabien Barthez – a World Cup winner for France in 1998 who also claimed Euro 2000 for Les Bleus – Andy Goram, Portuguese gloveman Ricardo, Roy Carroll and Tim Howard before Edwin van der Sar joined from Fulham in 2005.
United were hardly unsuccessful in that period, winning the title in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
But it was only after Van der Sar arrived that United were able to reclaim their dominant position, the Dutchman’s penalty shoot-out save from Nicolas Anelka in Moscow winning his second Champions League.
"We had a bad period trying to replace Peter Schmeichel,’’ conceded Ferguson. ‘’It’s maybe not my strong point.
"It wasn’t until we brought in Edwin that we got back to the level we had with Peter.
"Edwin was a great buy for us, absolutely brilliant. Looking back, I just wish we’d got him when Peter decided to leave.’’
