Mark Bosnich has warned Manchester United it would be footballing “suicide” to sell Wayne Rooney to Chelsea.
The Blues have had a second, near-£30million bid rejected but Jose Mourinho is determined to land the England striker.
Yet former keeper Bosnich, who played for both clubs, said: “Manchester United shouldn’t sell Wayne Rooney to Chelsea, who are one of their biggest rivals. From the club’s perspective that would be suicide.”
Rooney is absent from Tuesday night’s friendly at AIK Stockholm with a “shoulder injury” which the champions say he picked up in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the weekend.
He previously flew home from United's pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia less than a day after arriving because of a hamstring problem.
United’s refusal to do business with Chelsea has led to suggestions that the 27-year-old could slap in a written transfer request this week.
Bosnich, however, believes Rooney’s departure does indeed look inevitable.
But he has warned that arming Mourinho with a marksman of Rooney’s calibre would simply end up “hurting” United as they seek to retain their title.
Bosnich added: “Rooney can hurt them if he goes to Chelsea. If there was a choice between Arsenal and Chelsea, the lesser of two evils would be Arsenal.
“It’s very difficult to sell one of your best players to a club that can hurt you.
“Manchester United have come out very clearly and said they don’t want to sell Wayne Rooney. But if a player is not happy at a club then you are best off selling him."
Aussie Bosnich, a United player as a youngster and again from 1999-2001 before two unhappy years at Chelsea which included a ban following a failed drug test, added:
“It’s quite obvious he’s not happy. He was unhappy last season at not being a starter and, when he was dropped for the Champions League tie against Real Madrid, there were going to be problems.
“David Moyes has come in [as manager], they have a history together, both good and bad, and he was willing to let bygones be bygones, but I think Rooney wants a new challenge.”
