Sam Allardyce labelled Ravel Morrison a “genius” after the West Ham star’s Goal of the Season contender capped an astonishing upset over £100million Spurs.
The Hammers boss said: “That is a genius goal for me and you will struggle to see a better one this season.
“There is a lot of praise that will come his way and deservedly so after that goal.” The 19-year-old former Manchester United midfielder, called up to the England Under-21 squad, ran the length of the field, past two players before lifting the ball over keeper Hugo Lloris.
Spurs were crushed by a tactical masterstroke from ‘Big Sam’, whose team without strikers pulled off a first League win at White Hart Lane for 14 years.
Winston Reid and Ricardo Vaz Te struck before Morrison’s wonder strike 11 minutes from time sealed a remarkable victory.
Allardyce added: “The fans at Tottenham thought it was going to be a nice easy breeze, a nice comfortable three points.
“The Premier League will tell you if you think like that you are going to get your backside kicked and they got theirs kicked today.”
‘Big Sam’ also revealed Sir Alex Ferguson had convinced him to persevere with Morrison whose troubled times in Manchester had seen him exiled from Old Trafford. He went on: “Sir Alex said: ‘I hope you can sort him out because if you can he will be a genius. He needs to get away from Manchester and start a new life’.
“It looks like it is paying off for us.”
Defeat for Spurs was only their second in the Premier League this season.
Boss Andre Villas-Boas said: “It’s a wake-up call we have to react to. We have to bounce back and I trust the team to do that.”
The Tottenham boss also denied the club were struggling to juggle their top-four bid with a Europa League campaign.
“It’s nothing to do with the Europa League.” he said. “Nothing to do with playing Thursdays and Sundays.”
Police are reviewing video footage of fans chanting the ‘Y’ word after making their first-ever arrest over the issue during the match.
The supporter was held on suspicion of committing a section 5 public order offence at half time in the East Stand.
