Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis claims Manchester City tried to sign Edinson Cavani this summer - but their £29m bid was turned down.
The Uruguayan was heavily linked with a move away from Serie A all summer eventually leaving Naples to join Paris Saint Germain in a blockbuster £53m deal.
But the Azzurri chief now says that City were in for the 26-year-old before he agreed the switch to the Ligue 1 champions.
"Cavani, Manchester City visited me in Rome," explained De Laurentiis on Sky Sports News.
"But they just offered, I don't remember exactly but around 35 million [euros] so I didn't accept - there was a high level of interest."
Despite missing out on Cavani new City boss Manuel Pellegrini did manage to bolster his striking options with the capture of both Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic.
Negredo arrived at the Etihad from Sevilla for £16.4m while Montenegrin Jovetic joined from Fiorentina for a fee of £22.4m.
De Laurentiis is in London as his side prepare to face off against Arsenal in a crucial Champions League clash at the Emirates tonight.
And despite a good start to the season which sees his team flying high in Serie A, De Laurentiis is wary of what he says is a "very strong" Gunners side in what will be a clash of two in-form teams.
"It is very tough as the Gunners are very strong, we met them last August but it will be a different game," said the 64-year-old.
"We play without fear so I hope it is a good game."
