Kasami goal better than Van Basten volley, says Jol

The Swiss youngster hit a stunning effort at Selhurst Park, prompting his 57-year-old boss to compare it to one of the most iconic efforts in football history

Fulham boss Martin Jol has hailed Pajtim Kasami's sensational first-half strike against Crystal Palace, claiming it was even better than Marco van Basten's famous volley against USSR at Euro '88.

The 21-year-old Swiss midfielder netted the first of his club's four goals against the Eagles at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

Kasami latched onto Sascha Riether's long ball forward before controlling it with his chest and volleying it beyond the helpless dive of Julian Speroni, which, according to Jol, involved greater technique than van Basten's iconic goal.

"Kasami's is a better goal than people feel. You can't compare that with Van Basten's, no. This was better!" the Dutchman told Sky Sports after the match.

"You can talk about volleys and drop-kicks and that is probably difficult - but it looks a bit easier," he continued in his post-match press conference. "This was a 30-40 yard sprint, because he plays on the left, he turned up on the right in the box, he controlled it and he had a shot.

"I don't think he will ever score a goal like that again. But I think it will be at least one of the best goals this season."

Jol was adamant that the goal was the best any of his players, past or present, had ever scored.

"I have to say when I was in Holland, Luis Suarez scored 53 goals. He scores amazing goals, maybe a volley or two, but not like Kasami did tonight," he claimed.

"Van Basten was probably the best volley in the history of football but it was one touch, so that can happen you know. And this is different.

"This is a sprint, to control the ball, and then it's the wrong foot as well. I think, without stretching my imagination, that this must be one of the best goals.

"For a young kid to score a goal like that, it must give him a lot of confidence." ----------- goal.com

Kasami has impressed for the Cottagers this season, earning call-ups to the Switzerland national team, and has even been attracting the interest of Serie A reigning champions Juventus.
