Lothar Matthaus has angrily hit back at claims that he is dead.
The man, who skippered West Germany to World Cup glory in 1990, has long complained of being ignored in his homeland.
He claims he has been overlooked for a string of managerial jobs in recent years - most recently at Hamburg SV where he was pipped to the post by Dutchman Bert van Marwijk.
But the 52-year-old was left reeling after the latest snub, which saw a letter containing papers relating to an ex-wife from a Munich court was returned with the word 'deceased'.
"That is outrageous," the 52-year-old told Bild on Thursday. "Everyone can see that I am alive, whether on TV or on the pitch."
Once one of the most famous footballers on the planet, Matthaus was named European footballer of the year in 1990 and FIFA World Footballer of the year 12 months later.
His glittering playing career included winning seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and a Serie A Scudetto with Inter Milan as well as a pair of UEFA Cups with both.
In Euro 2000 he made the last of his 150 appearances for his country, making him the most capped German player in history.
Matthaus ended his playing career in America when he moved to Major League Soccer side MetroStars in 2000 and retirement followed two years later.
But his time as a manager has been more chequered with spells at clubs sides and national teams all around the world including Austria, Serbia, Hungary, Israel, and Bulgaria with varying degrees of success.
