England fans were warned of rip-off Rio hotel prices yesterday after a hostel started charging more than double the going rate of a place at The Ritz for its £40 rooms.
Ace Suites wants £850 a night for the digs – a 2,000% increase.
The small, windowless rooms are usually full of backpackers.
By comparison The Ritz has a suite on offer for £380 a night.
But some fans have already signed up.
For larger groups the hostel in Rio has dormitories with bunk beds for up to six people.
To sleep in there with five strangers during the World Cup, fans would have to pay £285 each.
But yesterday the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association was unapologetic for the inflated prices in the run-up to 2014.
It said: “During the Cup, the cost of everything will go up. That’s the market.”
Ace Suites boss Giovanne Gonalves said there are 18 rooms that are normally £77 a night.
Booking websites had showed them typically available for just £40.
She did not comment on World Cup prices.
Many leading hotels are already sold out.
Rooms have been bought up by large tour operators trying to sell packages to fans.
Some upped rates by 600%.
A spokesman for London England Fans said: “My advice would be – be patient, don’t book your hotels now, don’t book your hotels the day after the draw, wait.
“Based on the experience of every World Cup I’ve been to, flight and hotel prices will plummet around March or April.”
