David Beckham has said that Glenn Hoddle "fed the frenzy" that resulted in the ex-Manchester United man receiving death threats following his red card for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.
The midfielder was sent off following a petulant kick at Argentina midfielder Diego Simone in England's second round penalty shoot-out loss in Saint Etienne and was subject to widespread criticism and even death threats at the time.
And he claims that an interview the then-Three Lions boss Hoddle gave at the time made the situation worse for him.
"I found this interview difficult to take," says the 38-year-old in his new autobiography that is currently being serialised in the Times.
"He didn't blame me, exactly, but he made it clear that he thought that my mistake cost England the game. He showed his anger and irritation with me. It definitely fed the frenzy."
In Manchester United's first away game of the 1998-99 campaign at West Ham, Beckham required an armed guard to escort him off the pitch and he also received bullets in the post and saw his effigy burned from lampposts that season.
Former Spurs boss Hoddle has recently returned the FA as part of chairman Greg Dyke's new commission that has been tasked with turning around the fortunes of the England national team
The ex-LA Galaxy star's comments also come after his former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson criticised him in his own autobiography that was released earlier this month.
