Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has revealed that in his time under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford only TWO players were ever sure of their places.
Robin van Persie was one of them, says Evans. Wayne Rooney was not.
With the Rooney transfer saga
seemingly growing out of whether Wazza has been treated unreasonably -
or treated just like everyone else - Evans' insight is eyecatching.
Speaking
on United's pre-season tour about his own efforts to nail down a
first-team slot at United, Evans recalled that Fergie never wanted a
player to feel he had a right to play, or to line-up in a particular
position.
The exceptions that proved the rule were RvP and
Cristiano Ronaldo - both always first choice in their positions
according to Evans. Jonny Evans and Wayne Rooney of Manchester United in Bangkok

"Unless it was Robin van Persie or Cristiano Ronaldo when he
was here, there was never a first choice in any position," said Evans,
according to agency reports.
"If you didn't perform he would have
you out of the team, but then if one of the other players had a game or
two when they weren't at their best the manager would have no problem
putting you back in. Special treatment? Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson

"The key thing was whenever he picked a team you always
thought he was doing it for a reason, not because of any personal
vendetta or that he didn't rate you."
Clearly the sort of regime
Evans describes isn't going to suit all the people all the time -
particularly perhaps if your name is Wayne and a new player comes in and
seems to get unusual treatment ahead of you. October, 2012 - all smiles for RVP and Roo, but it's not stayed that way

How things might pan out under David Moyes will be at the
forefront of every United player's mind at the moment, Evans added: "Now
we don't know how the new manager will work. That is why everyone is so
desperate to impress."
A regime change is looking to have arrived
too late to keep Rooney at Old Trafford, but it sounds like he was
never that 'exceptional' a player anyway.
