Barcelona chase for David Luiz intensifies as Thiago Silva signs new PSG deal
The Blues centre-back is now the Azulgrana's top target after his Brazil teammate extended his stay with the Parisians
Chelsea could face a fight to keep David Luiz after Barcelona made the Brazilian their number one priority.
The Spanish champions' long-term interest in Thiago Silva was ended after Paris Saint-Germain tied the centre-back down to a new deal, and with Roma defender Marquinhos also rejecting Barcelona's overtures to sign on at the Parc des Princes, the capture of 26-year-old Luiz has become more important than ever.
The Azulgrana's bungled search for a central defender led to them signing Alex Song last summer, but with the Cameroon midfielder struggling to impress and Eric Abidal leaving, the Camp Nou club are terribly short in defence.
Back-up option Andreu Fontas has also left, meaning Gerardo Martino's first job as Barca boss is to recruit a top-class centre-back.
If his chase for Luiz fails, 'Tata' will make a cut-priced move for Inter Milan's Walter Samuel as a short-term fix.
