Okagbare Goes For Long Jump in Lausanne

Okagbare Goes For Long Jump in Lausanne

IAAF Diamond League holds tomorrow

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare has been listed among a top quality field of jumpers that will compete tomorrow when the IAAF Diamond League makes its eighth stop in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fresh from her impressive 200m run in Birmingham, England on Sunday where she defeated a field that included reigning Olympic 100m champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and former world champions, Carmeliter Jeter, the Nigerian will battle another Olympic and double world champion, Britnney Reese of the USA for the four maximum points on offer.

Okagbare, who won an Olympic medal in the event five years ago in Beijing holds a personal season’s best of 6.92m, the fifth best jump in the world so far this year will be hoping she not only jumps farther than her adverssaries including Reese who holds the best jump in the world so far this year (7.25m), but also Chioma Ajunwa’s 17 years old 7.12m African record.

Two months ago in Doha,Qatar at the opening leg of the IAAF Diamond League series,an excessive tail wind of 2.2mps rendered Okagbare’s 7.14m jump illegal.

A favourable wind would have fetched her a new Nigeria and African record as well as make her only the second Nigerian nay African woman to hit the 7m mark.

Also in action tomorrow night is the rising star of Nigerian athletics, Reggina George.

George won her consecutive national 400m title last month in Calabar with a new 50.99 personal best to match. She has been listed among a crack field that includes two world champions, Amantle Monthso of Botswana and Nigeria-born Briton, Christine Ohuruogu. ---------------------- complete sports
