The Confederations Cup was always going to be a make-or-break tournament for Fred. Even those who respected his work ethic doubted whether he was really worthy of the Selecao's iconic No.9 shirt and, after two scoreless outings against Japan and Mexico, it appeared that the Fluminense striker had blown his big chance.
However, Felipe Scolari persisted with his misfiring forward for the game against Italy and Fred repaid his coach's faith in him with a double in a 4-2 win that clinched top spot in Group A.
The former Lyon attacker netted again in the semi-final success over Uruguay but he saved the best for last, putting Brazil ahead in the final against Spain with a fantastically instinctive finish off the floor before killing off the reigning world and European champions with an immaculately measured first-time finish just after the break.
It really has been a sensational turnaround for the much-maligned striker, as Goal Brasil Editor Matheus Harb outlines below.
"One thing is for sure, Fred has made the absolute most of this Confederations Cup, taking his renowned poaching skills to the next level as he scored once against Uruguay and then twice against the seemingly impenetrable Spanish defence," he enthuses.
"The Fluminense striker now has the respect and appreciation of all Brazilian supporters, who were desperately looking for a reliable target man, with Luis Fabiano having lost his place in the Selecao line-up.
"The fans like to say, Fred 'will catch you'. Well, he's caught the imagination of the Brazilian public and he's now almost certain to retain the no.9 jersey for Brazil at next year's World Cup."
| Congratulations to Fred, Goal's 216th World Player of the Week winner! |
