David Moyes vowed to carry on Manchester United’s phenomenal success on his first official day as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.
Monday marked the beginning of Moyes’ six-year contract as the champions’ new manager and he wasted no time getting stuck into his lengthy to-do list.
He
arrived, smiling, at the Carrington training ground in a club-sponsored
Chevrolet just after 8am and quickly settled into legend Fergie’s old
office.
Within two hours, he had confirmed his new back-room staff of assistant manager Steve Round, goalkeeping coach Chris Woods and coach Jimmy Lumsden, clearing out Fergie’s old guard.
Moyes also turned his thoughts to a crunch meeting later this week with Wayne Rooney and his agent Paul Stretford when he hopes to persuade the England star to stay at Old Trafford.
The former Everton boss then considered a progress report on his summer targets.
He is closing in on Benfica’s £17million Benfica centre-half Ezequiel Garay, and also wants Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, midfielder Kevin Strootman of PSV Eindhoven and his old Everton left-back Leighton Baines.
Moyes, 50, is excited to begin finally his reign, having been
appointed on May 9, and claims he can maintain the club’s golden era.
He
controversially cleared out Fergie’s lieutenants Mike Phelan, Rene
Meulensteen and Eric Steele to make way for his Everton staff.
“I’ve
worked with Steve, Chris and Jimmy for a number of years and I’m
delighted they have decided to join me at this great club,” said Moyes.
“They bring great qualities in their respective fields and I know that, like me, they feel that this is a challenge to relish.
“I have great faith that together, we can build upon the success this club has enjoyed over many years.”
United fully backed Moyes’ decision to bring in his own coaching staff.
Executive
vice chairman Ed Woodward, who officially took over David Gill’s duties
on Monday, said: “I believe with David and his new team in place we can
now start preparing for the new season ahead.
“This is an
exciting and challenging time for the club and I have great belief that
David and his team will have all the energy and attributes needed to
help this club continue in its long-standing traditions.”
Moyes was also boosted by news that Nemanja Vidic does not want to leave Old Trafford.
Vidic’s agent Silvano Martina rubbished reports linking the United skipper with AC Milan as "all pub talk”.
