The Napoli forward insisted that Uruguay left the tournament with their reputation intact, and believes the experience will serve them well ahead of the World Cup
Edinson Cavani spoke of his pride at Uruguay's Confederations Cup campaign following their defeat in the third place play-off against Italy on Sunday.

The Napoli forward struck twice - his second from a sumptuous free-kick which beat Gianluigi Buffon before netting in the shootout as Uruguay eventualy were defeated 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra-time.

And despite the South American champions' fourth place finish in the tournament, Cavani was adamant that the country comes away from the tournament with their reputation intact.

"Well, I'm content for having scored goals today, but the nicest thing is that Uruguay leaves the Cup with a very good image, and walking tall," the 26-year-old told reporters after the game.

"I don't want to speak about luck, but they did enough to win the game. This makes a difference in a moment like this. But we did well, we played with honour, fought hard and now we leave with reasons to believe in this team.

"We did a beautiful job, with wins and good results like this one. We're showing again the same Uruguay that did well at Copa America and the World Cup qualifiers. And that's all that matters so close to the World Cup."

Captain Diego Lugano echoed his team-mate's sentiments, and lamented his side's narrow failure against more esteemed opponents.

"That's the image that's left behind, a fine tournament with the best squads in the world. Unfortunately, we played some really strong opponents, and we missed the top by very little," the 32-year-old said.

"We did well. This Uruguay that played the Confederations Cup, and the one that won Copa America, it's the true Uruguay." --------------------- goal.com
