Blanc: I did not hesitate to play grieving Lavezzi

The PSG coach was full of praise for the attacker, whose uncle was shot dead earlier in the week

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc praised Ezequiel Lavezzi for his contribution to the club’s 3-0 victory over Valenciennes on Friday night.

The Argentine attacker’s uncle was murdered earlier in the week, though the former Napoli player volunteered to play and contributed the first goal before provoking Gary Kagelmacher to put through his own net in the second half.

In between times, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for a heavily rotated home side.

“It was a unique evening for him [Lavezzi],” Blanc told the press. “He told me he was ready to play and I did not hesitate to use him. Despite his suffering, he played well.”

Ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League last 16 first leg against Bayer Leverkusen, the PSG coach rested numerous regulars, such as Alex, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi.

Blanc was pleased that his side got clear of their rivals relatively early to allow more alterations to be made.

“Although we had planned for this scenario, we still had to execute it,” the former France captain explained. “The second and third goals helped us to rest some of our biggest players.

“Before Leverkusen our job was primarily to win this game. They could have thought of that match but they ignored it and did the job. Yes, we could have been more efficient, but to score three times without conceding is not bad.”

The coach also had some positive news to report on injured forward Edinson Cavani, who is set to miss the match in Germany, despite stepping up his recuperation from injury.

“Edinson started running on Friday,” the coach revealed. “After two weeks, that’s not bad. It augers well.” ---------- goal.com
