Cristiano Ronaldo claims top spot in race for European Golden Shoe

The Portugal international enjoyed another fruitful week as he netted three goals in his last game to take Nerijus Valskis' place at the top
Cristiano Ronaldo has dethroned Nerijus Valskis as the leader in the European Golden Shoe rankings following his fine performance for Real Madrid against Real Sociedad.

The Portugal international netted a hat-trick to help his side to a 5-1 win over the Basque side and has now scored 16 goals in 2013-14.

Veteran striker Frode Johnsen, meanwhile, moved into fourth spot after scoring the winner in Odds' 3-2 victory over Honefoss to take his tally for the season to 24.

Kalju Nomme attacker Vladimir Voskoboinikov also had a weekend to remember as he hit all of his side's goals in their 3-0 win against Tammeka Tartu.

A fresh face in the top 10 is Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi, who continued his fine form this term with two goals against Sampdoria to become Serie A's leading scorer with 11 goals.

Other names who had a remarkable week include Heerenveen's Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason following the first Eredivisie hat-trick of his career and Estonian hitman Rimo Hunt, who took his tally for 2013-14 to 22.

History & How It Works

Players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Diego Forlan have won the European Golden Shoe in the past few seasons, with the Argentina international as the latest winner of the award following his 46 goals in 2012-13.

Other noteworthy winners include the likes of Francesco Totti, Luca Toni, Ronaldo, Marco van Basten, Eusebio and Gerd Muller.

The weightings are determined by the league's ranking on the Uefa coefficients, which in turn depend on the results of each league's clubs in European competition over the previous five seasons. Goals scored in the top five leagues according to the Uefa coefficients are multiplied by a factor of two, and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 are multiplied by 1.5. Goals in all other leagues are all worth one single point.

This measure has prevented players from so-called weaker leagues from winning the European Golden Shoe, since a goal scored in, for example, Armenia, Estonia or Azerbaijan, carries less weight than a goal scored in Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga or the Premier League. ----------------- goal.com

I think you deserve it cos you work really hard and it shows on the pitch...
