Defiant Mackay refutes quit rumours as Cardiff fans stage sit-in Anfield protest

The Scot has been told to resign or be sacked by the Bluebirds' controversial owner, Vincent Tan, but he has no intention of walking away - and he has the supporters on his side

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has reiterated that he will not resign as the club's manager, as supporters staged a sit-in protest at Anfield to support their under-fire boss.

The Bluebirds were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool, thanks in part to two goals from Luis Suarez, at the end of a week in which it has emerged that the club's owner, Vincent Tan, has told Mackay to resign or be sacked.

VIEW FROM ANFIELD

Brendan Rodgers described Malky Mackay as the "perfect man to manage Cardiff City" after seeing his side defeat the Bluebirds 3-1 at Anfield on a day that both sets of fans rallied to support the under-fire Scot.

The Kop applauded the visiting supporters as they sang their support for him directly at Vincent Tan, and Mackay, who spent five minutes thanking his fans on the pitch at full-time, was described as a "proud man" by Rodgers.

The Malaysian may yet have the final say on this frankly ludicrous situation in south Wales, but if today does prove to be the end for Mackay, the Cardiff owner should be left in no doubt as to what the football community thinks of him. Depressingly, you wonder if he even cares.
Emails from Tan to Mackay were leaked to the press in recent days, highlighting how far the situation in south Wales has deteriorated.

Cardiff fans remained in their seats for at least 30 minutes after the final whistle on Saturday lunchtime, warning Tan that he "will have a riot on his hands" if he forces the Scot from his position.

And Mackay himself has come out fighting, insisting that he will not back down and walk away from his post.

"I just want to reiterate absolutely 100 per cent that I won’t be resigning from the football club," he told BT Sport after the game.

"I’m a proud, passionate man and to have led this club and team as I’ve done for two and a half years... my players and my staff... I couldn’t look at myself if I was to resign.

"You see the fans how much they back our team and how much they’re enjoying our Premier League season. They’re backing us every Saturday home and away – they’ve not changed all season in their numbers, the noise and the backing.

"I’m so proud of my group of players and staff in the way they represent them. We’re absolutely determined to make sure we make a fist of this.

"I won’t be walking away – I’m proud to be the manager of Cardiff City."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who is close friends with Mackay after they two worked together at Watford, came out in support of his counterpart after the match.

"It’s the very least he deserves," he told BT Sport. "I think everyone in football – there’s only one person who seems to think Malky’s not doing a brilliant job.

"They came out in the second half fighting for themselves and their manager and put in a really good performance. It’s a ridiculous situation that’s seen him come under unnecessary pressure." ----------- goal.com
