Wenger rules Ramsey out for festive period
The Arsenal midfielder faces a spell on the sidelines after injuring his thigh during the Gunners' 3-1 win at West Ham on Boxing Day, and could be out for a number of weeks

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed Aaron Ramsey will miss the rest of the festive period after picking up a thigh injury in the 3-1 win at West Ham on Boxing Day.

The Welshman will definitely be unavailable Sunday’s trip to Newcastle and the home clash with Cardiff on New Year’s Day - and he could face several weeks on the sideline after appearing to signal he had torn the muscle in the second-half at Upton Park.

“It looks a thigh strain,” Wenger told reporters in his post-match press conference. “I don’t know how serious it is but the Christmas period is certainly over for him.”

Arsenal fell behind to Carlton Cole’s second-half goal but hit back through two goals from Theo Walcott before substitute Lukas Podolski rounded off the victory.

Wenger felt his side’s comeback - on the back of four games without a win in all competitions - showed the character of potential Premier League champions.

“I’m proud of the character of this team,” he added. “They are always focused and try to do well. The team wants to do well, their character is great and concentration is top.

“I’m delighted. I feel we controlled the game. We had plenty of chances. We responded very well to a difficult period and in the end won the game in a convincing way.”

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce was annoyed as his team dropped in to the relegation zone after missing several opportunities to double their lead in the second-half.

Allardyce said: “We let it slip through our fingers. We missed three golden chances after we scored and we paid the price.

“We’ve got to play as well as we did today against other teams. You can always lose to Arsenal, whether you’ve played your best or not.” -------------- goal.com
