Montella: We miss Gomez

The 39-year-old coach was left frustrated as he watched his Viola side squander chance after chance in their defeat at the Stadio Friuli

Vincenzo Montella conceded that his Fiorentina side felt the absence of forward Mario Gomez in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Udinese.

The Viola put in a disjointed display as they lost on the road for just the second time this season, with the hosts snatching victory thanks to Thomas Heurtaux, who got on the end of Roberto Pereyra’s flick on to prod the ball home from a couple of yards.

Fiorentina saw plenty of possession but lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. It’s only the second time that they’ve failed to find the net in Serie A this season, but Montella insisted that Gomez’s absence has left a void up top.

“He is the kind of player we are lacking and he probably would’ve scored today,” the 39-year-old told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“We didn’t play a good second half after creating chances that we should’ve taken.

“We were too frenetic and that did not allow us to play our usual style of football. We weren’t playing as a team unit and lost the joy of passing the ball around, which is something this side needs.

“There was also a silly error on the goal that we conceded from a set play. Teams that win are the ones who don’t concede, though at times you have to take into account the talents of your opponents too.”

Montella’s side currently sit fifth in the table and will be hoping to welcome back Gomez sooner rather than later, with the German scheduled to rejoin his team-mates on the training field this week after his knee injury. ----------------- goal.com
