New York: Before Roger Federer’s impending fourth round clash with unheralded Spaniard Tommy Robredo, the world was waiting with bated breath for the Swiss greats’ first ever potential encounter with Rafael Nadal at US Open.

Come Monday and all their hopes went up in smokes as Federer suffered a straight set defeat to Robredo.

Following his defeat, Federer blamed his inconsistency, lack of confidence for his disappointing show.

"I kind of self-destructed, which is very disappointing."

"It just ended up being a bad combination of many things today. I`ve definitely got to go back to work and come back stronger,” Federer said after the match.

Federer is far from his old self as he has endured a disappointing 2013 season and he has failed to make it to the final of even one grand slam event – his first since 2002.

Robredo and Federer have come face to face on ten previous occasions with the latter emerging victorious in each of those encounters.

However, the 11th clash between the two came at a time when the Swiss master is at the worst phase of his tennis career.

Federer has himself accepted that he needs to work harder and come back stronger if he has to pose challenge to the likes of Nadal. -------------------- ZEENEWS.com
