Ligue 1: Falcao hits double in Monaco cruise

The Rouge et Blanc remain top of French football with a 3-0 win against Bastia on Wednesday, while Nice and Olympique Lyonnais slipped up

Monaco continued their unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 season with a 3-0 victory over Bastia at the Stade Louis II on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Riviere opened the scoring for Claudio Ranieri's men with 39 minutes on the clock. Radamel Falcao then scored just before half-time before doubling his tally - and taking his total this season to seven goals in as many games - with a minute to play.

Monaco remain top of the division, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Valenciennes 1-0 thanks to an Edinson Cavani strike earlier on Wednesday.

With the Rouge et Blanc streaking ahead in the table, a number of teams further down dropped further back, as seventh and eighth-placed Nice and Olympique Lyonnais fell to defeats against Nantes and Ajaccio respectively.

Lyon, who had beaten Nantes on Sunday, were unable to keep out their hosts as Aboubacar Camara scored his first career goal to seal a 2-1 victory.

Nice, on the other hand, failed to even get off their mark when they visited Michel Der Zakarian’s side with goals from Filip Djordjevic and Fernando Aristeguieta seeing the hosts grab a 2-0 triumph.

There was also disappointment for early strugglers Sochaux and Girondins de Bordeaux who failed to pick up three points from their encounters with Guingamp and Reims.

Bordeaux drew 0-0, while Sochaux slipped to their third league loss in a row as Guingamp thrashed them 5-1 with five goals from as many players as Cedric Bakambu’s effort barely served as a consolation.

Toulouse secured a positive result as Alain Casanova’s team sealed a 1-0 win over Lorient with 22-year-old Martin Braithwaite netting his third goal of the new campaign. --------------- goal.com
