Super Falcons lose 2-0 to Japan in friendly

The reigning world champions defeated the Super Falcons courtesy of goals from Yuki Ogumi and Nahomi Kawasumi in Nagasaki on Sunday
Nigeria lost 2-0 to Japan in an international friendly played in Nagasaki on Sunday. The hosts got their victory courtesy of goals by Yuki Ogimi and Nahomi Kawasumi in front of an impressive crowd of 15,206 people.
Though Nigeria hit the crossbar via a shot by Esther Sunday in the first half, it was Japan all the way, thanks to their high-pressing and some very good moments of passing football.
With Homare Sawa as defensive midfielder, Aya Miyama played higher and distributed quite a few splendid passes - from one of those came Ogimi's goal, after the latter dribbled around goalkeeper Ebubeleye Whyte.
In the second half, the Japanese dominated and they got the second goal through local girl Kawasumi who was also celebrating her birthday.
Nigeria’s Blessing Edoho impressed very positively during the game with her great speed and excellent footwork that might have caught the eyes of Japanese scouts, according to Goal Japan chief editor Cesare Polenghi who was at the game.
Even though the Super Falcons fought well, they could not match up to the quality of the reigning World champions.
Japan coach Norio Sasaki said after the game: “We won and we did well, but we were not yet perfect. The Nigerians are better than what we saw tonight, I am looking forward to the next game.”
Falcons striker Uchechi Sunday stated: “Our camp started only two weeks ago, we are still not at the top of our condition, but we will do better in the next game. We are very strong physically, but the Japanese team has amazing technique.
“The defenders were very good, Miyake did great. The atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic, so many people,” said Sunday.
Asked if she would like to play in Japan by reporters, Sunday retorted: “Of course! See you at the next game for now!”
The two teams will play again on Thursday. ------------------ goal.com
