Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a last-ditch attempt to sign Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil prior to his club-record transfer to the Gunners from Real Madrid.
According
to Spanish reporter Jose Luis Sanchez, speaking on sports show Jugones,
the Portuguese boss made contact with his former club in an attempt to
beat his Premier League rivals to the signature of the 24-year-old
German international.
However, despite his ties with the nine-time
European champions, following his three-year spell as manager in the
Spanish capital, Mourinho moved "too late" to conclude a deal for the talented schemer .
"Mourinho
wanted to sign Mesut Ozil, but arrived late because the offer had been
received [from] Arsenal for Real Madrid," explained Sanchez.

Ozil has shone since his £42million move to north London and new boss Arsene Wenger has tipped his No. 11 to lead his sides title tilt this season, a sentiment shared by Arsenal returnee Mathieu Flamini.
Moreover
Mourinho, who claimed one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey crown
during his three seasons in Spain, wanted to make it a triple raid on
his old club.

coach also made offers for Ozil's international colleague Sami Khedira

With regards to Khedira, Sanchez insisted that he was believed
indispensible at the Santiago Bernabeu, having held a key role in their
midfield during the last three years and that "Los Blancos did not
listen to any offers for the German."
Coentrao, the 25-year-old
left-back who missed out on a deadline day move to Manchester United,
also interested the Europa League winners but Sanchez stated that though
Mourinho spoke to his compatriot, "negotiations did not bear fruit."
