00Thomas Sørensen
Did the basics well and in general had a good game. Nothing he could do to stop fantastic strikes from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra -
10Erik Pieters
Not his greatest performance as Ashley Young got the better of him second half. Rarely got the chance to go forward and support the midfield from wide areas. -
01Marc Wilson
Calm and collective performance from the Scotland international. He is an adequate replacement for Robert Huth. Shows good positioning and a consistency in his passing. -
00Ryan Shawcross
Brave and aware. Nullified the threat of Welbeck. He has such good timing when heading the ball and rarely loses out in the air. -
02Geoff Cameron
Was alert to any danger coming from the United left. Got forward on occasions and was unlucky with a left-foot drive early on. Often looked for the long ball. -
00Glenn Whelan
Deployed in a defensive midfield role, he closed down well but was largely second best in the contest with Jones. -
01W. Palacios Flop of the Match
They say there's no fitness like match-fitness and this is clearly lacking in Palacios' case. Slow on the ball and looked tired as the game wore on. -
00Stephen Ireland
Tried to make things happen when he got chance in the Stoke midfield, looking to play the ball down the channels. The problem for him was that often the midfield was bypassed. -
10Jonathan Walters
Busy on the right-hand side. Was not one bit happy at the game being halted in the first half. Moved into a central role after the break and was Stoke's biggest threat -
10Oussama Assaidi
Never stopped running but didn't really get the chance to run at Rafael much. It wasn't really his type of game and he was replaced early in the second half. -
00Peter Crouch
Quite static upfront but in all fairness the Stoke midfield gave him no service to feet. When he did receive it he showed great link-up play.
Substitutions
-
00Charlie Adam
Came on as a second-half substitute and did little to swing the game in Stoke's favour. -
01Marko Arnautovic
Brought on wide left to give Stoke a bit more presence going forward. He provided some excellent crosses in the second half.
-
00David de Gea
Stoke's opportunities were limited which meant a very quiet night's work for the Spanish goalkeeper. Clean sheet. -
11Rafael
Mature performance from the full-back who's positioning was top draw. He got forward well when needed. Solid game. -
21Phil Jones
Lively in midfield and played the ball simply and effectively. Always first to the ball, showing good awareness, and strong in the tackle. -
00Jonny Evans
Organised the defence well and was only really threatened when Walters moved into a central position. An easy night all round for Evans. -
00Chris Smalling
Looked relatively good on his return to the side. Like Evans, never looked to be in trouble. His defensive heading, in particular, was top drawer. -
01Patrice Evra
Funnily enough he never got forward as much as normal but he took his goal really well to seal the game with a great curling effort on his weaker side. Other than that it was a solid evening from the United captain. -
02Anderson
A fitness work-out for Anderson who passed the ball well in the first half and looked to control the game. Replaced just inside the second half. -
01Ashley Young Top of the Match
Scored a wonderful goal to give United the lead. Also had the best chance of the first half but could only fire wide. Was very busy throughout the game. -
11Tom Cleverley
Kept things ticking in the United midfield without doing anything spectacular. Moyes will be pleased with his display, following up from his goal away at Villa. -
00Antonio Valencia
Gets forward so fast for his side and is always a threat. His direct play caused Stoke constant problems and he won numerous corners on the night. -
00Danny Welbeck
Quiet game for Welbeck leading the line for United. Linked up well with Young to create the first opening of the game but was well controlled by Stoke's centre-back pairing.
Substitutions
-
01Darren Fletcher
Another late substitute appearance for Fletcher as he looks to build up match fitness after returning from serious illness. The United fans love him and it's great to see him back. -
31Chicharito
Bright as ever when he came on. His movement is phenomenal. Great awareness to link up with Ashley Young for the opener so soon after coming on. -------------------- goal.com
