Player Ratings: Arsenal 1-1 Everton

Substitute Gerard Deulofeu struck late on to cancel out Mesut Ozil's opener at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the spoils were shared in north London

By Ewan Roberts at the Emirates Stadium

  • Wojciech Szczesny
    10
    3

    Wojciech Szczesny

Despite Everton's superior possession in the first half, the Polish keeper was never troubled. Carried out his duties with minimal fuss, though might feel he could have done more to stop Deulofeu's late goal.
  • Per Mertesacker
    8
    3

    Per Mertesacker

Was handed the unenviable task of trying to shackle Lukaku and largely matched the Belgian's force and power. The German was commanding on the air and marshaled the back-line with authority.
  • Laurent Koscielny
    12
    2

    Laurent Koscielny

Carried the ball out from the back with supreme confidence and managed the pace of Lukaku well. Has developed an almost unpenetrable understanding with Mertesacker that was rarely breached.
  • Carl Jenkinson
    5
    2

    Carl Jenkinson

Kept Pienaar under wraps well, though was occasionally exposed by Oviedo's overlaps. Played a rather conservative role and didn't push forward in the manner that saw him create the opener against Hull.
  • Kieran Gibbs
    8
    5

Kieran Gibbs Flop of the Match

Gibbs struggled to contain an Everton right flank that was full of pace and intent, and took time to get to grips with Coleman's overlaps. Guilty of switching off, showed little attacking impetus, and failed to close down Deulofeu for the Spaniard's goal.
  • Mikel Arteta
    4
    2

    Mikel Arteta

The former Toffees' skipper really grew into the game. After losing the midfield battle in the first half, he took more control as the game wore on. Kept possession ticking and made some fine tackles and interceptions to halt Everton's advances.
  • Jack Wilshere
    4
    1

    Jack Wilshere

Worked diligently in midfield and was moved around to scupper Everton's more threatening partnerships. Found little pockets of space to create, forging a handful of chances, though they were not converted. Came off for Flamini in a triple sub for the hosts.
  • Mesut Özil
    20
    2

    Mesut Özil

Far from his most effective today, though nevertheless struck Arsenal's goal, thumping the ball in from close range. Played some level, intricate passes and remains a talisman for the league leaders.
  • Aaron Ramsey
    7
    1

    Aaron Ramsey

As hard working as ever, the Welshman scrapped and fought in midfield while offering a consistent outlet on the ball. Busy in possession, threading through-balls, but could not beat Howard one-on-one. Replaced by Rosicky.
  • Santi Cazorla
    1
    4

    Santi Cazorla

Did not offer enough protection to Gibbs in the early exchanges so swapped flanks with Wilshere. Flitted in and out of the match, and had chances to score but for his wastefulness. Replaced by Walcott.
  • Olivier Giroud
    3
    5

    Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman was an excellent release for the Gunners, holding onto the ball and feeding others with consummate ease. As cerebral as he is, he struggled in front of goal before hitting the bar with a stunning drive late on.

Substitutions

  • Tomas Rosicky
    5
    1

    Tomas Rosicky

Part of a triple sub for the hosts, the Czech replaced Ramsey. Whipped in an invited cross which led to Ozil's goal.
  • Mathieu Flamini
    5
    1

    Mathieu Flamini

Came on for Wilshere and almost scored with his first touch, rifling the ball past the far post. Could have won it late on but missed the ball completely.
  • Theo Walcott
    6
    2

    Theo Walcott

Replaced Cazorla midway through the second half and set-up Ozil's goal with a header back across the six-yard box.
  • Tim Howard
    2
    0

    Tim Howard

The American shot-stopper made several fine saves, especially at the end of the first half - twice darting off his line to paw away dinked attempts. A fine performance from Everton's No.1.
  • Phil Jagielka
    0
    1

    Phil Jagielka

Rarely allowed Arsenal to get in behind him and coped with the threat of Giroud well, stepping up to rob the Frenchman. Composed on the ball and really organised the Toffees' defence well as they dug in for the second period.
  • Bryan Oviedo
    3
    0

    Bryan Oviedo

Deputising for the injured Leighton Baines, the Costa Rican was an adventurous presence down the left. Linked well with Pienaar and joined counter-attacks, though might have done more to stop Walcott winning a header for Arsenal's goal.
  • Sylvain Distin
    1
    0

    Sylvain Distin

An enduringly dependable presence at the back, the veteran centre-back used the ball well and showed a rapid turn of pace despite his advancing years. The Arsenal attack got little change out of the Frenchman.
  • James McCarthy
    1
    0

    James McCarthy

Tidy and composed in midfield, the Ireland international helped Everton take control of the match and dominate possession. Also worked extremely hard, and tackled even harder - earning a yellow card.
  • Gareth Barry
    1
    3

Gareth Barry Top of the Match

The on-loan Manchester City midfielder's tireless work rate and tenacity allowed the more attack-minded players in front of him greater freedom. Combined that doggedness with crisp, quick passing.
  • Ross Barkley
    2
    1

    Ross Barkley

Found an enormous amount of space between the lines in the opening exchanges. Came alive in explosive bursts, driving towards goal, though could not find a killer pass. A lively, if profligate, display. Replaced by Naismith in injury time.
  • Steven Pienaar
    0
    2

    Steven Pienaar

Linked up well with Oviedo, releasing the full-back with cute flicks and passes, but caused little threat to the Arsenal backline himself. Did sting Szczesny's palms with a long-range drive. Replaced by the more defense-conscious Osman.
  • Seamus Coleman
    1
    0

    Seamus Coleman

Rampaged forward from full-back, overloading Gibbs on several occasions, though his crosses too often found a red shirt. His forays left a lot of space for Arsenal to break into, but he covered well.
  • Kevin Mirallas
    1
    1

    Kevin Mirallas

Full of intent, driving forward at great pace, especially on the break, but could not find a decisive end product - typified by a wildly over-hit free-kick. Drifted out of the game but always worked hard. Replaced by Deulofeu.
  • Romelu Lukaku
    0
    2

    Romelu Lukaku

Showed his raw, brutish physicality, though was let down by poor close control. As the game continued, the Arsenal centre-backs became extremely adept at nullifying him.

Substitutions

  • Leon Osman
    0
    1

    Leon Osman

Replaced Pienaar in the second half and worked hard, though offered far less going forward than the South African.
  • Gerard Deulofeu
    2
    4

    Gerard Deulofeu

Came on for Mirallas late on and made a stunning impact, rocketing a shot past Szczesny. Another fantastic cameo from the Catalan youngster.
  • Steven Naismith
    1
    1

    Steven Naismith

Replaced Barkley in injury time. -------------------- goal.com
