Manchester United are ready to open contract talks with Antonio Valencia - to avoid losing him on the cheap.
United supremo Ed Woodward wants to tie down the Ecuador international with a new deal soon.
Reliable Valencia - hailed by boss David Moyes for his display in the weekend victory over Aston Villa - has 18 months left on his current agreement.
He could look for a transfer at the end of this season if the terms on offer at United are not right, but the Old Trafford giants want to keep him.
The former Wigan winger is one of the lower earners in the champions' squad and is looking for a pay rise and a long-term deal like the one the Reds gave fellow wideman Nani in September.
Valencia, 28, has been linked with moves away from Old Trafford, but is settled and has not pushed to leave.
The talks need to be sorted soon though, or United will have another issue on their hands that they are keen to avoid.
