Garcia: Roma firmly in Scudetto race

The French coach was pleased to see his side get back to winning ways and is convinced they what it takes to challenge Juventus for top honours in Serie A
Rudi Garcia believes Roma's victory over Fiorentina confirms their tag as genuine contenders in the Serie A title race.

The Giallorossi remain unbeaten in the league this season but victory over la Viola - courtesy of goals from Maicon and Mattia Destro - halted a run of four straight draws and Garcia thinks a return to winning ways shows they have what it takes to challenge league leaders Juventus.

"Today what really mattered was to win and I am very happy for both the players and the fans," the Frenchman told Sky Italia after the final whistle.

"We are unbeaten and doing well, but Juventus are doing even better. They constructed a team to win the Scudetto and Champions League.

"I wish them all the best for Tuesday's game with Galatasaray in Istanbul, but Roma are in the Scudetto race too."

Destro returned from injury as a substitute to fire a brilliant winner after Juan Vargas' earlier equaliser, and Garcia was quick to praise the strength in depth of his squad - particularly after Miralem Pjanic was sent off for two bookable offences and will now face a suspension.

"I have a good squad and someone else will take his place," the 49-year old said of Pjanic's impending absence.

"Francesco Totti didn't have more than 15 minutes in his legs, so it was better to give him another week of intensive training and he can be ready for next week.

"It was also great for Destro, who had been out of action for a very long time. He did well, changed the game and made his mark on the afternoon."

Roma remain in second place in the league table, three points off Juventus, and travel to San Siro next weekend to take on AC Milan. -------------- goal.com
