Fluminense saved from relegation

The 2012 Brasileirao champions finished the season in 17th spot but will play top flight football next season after a favourable twist of fate
Fluminense have been saved from relegation from Brasileirao Serie A after Portuguesa were deducted four points and suffered the dreaded drop instead.

Flu were crowned champions of Brazil's top flight in 2012 but remarkably, just 12 months later, finished in 17th spot and faced the devastation of playing second tier football next season.

However, Portuguesa's decision to field an ineligible player, Hevverton, in their final game of the season when he should have been serving a suspension having been sent off in his side's previous match, resulted in a fortuitous twist of fate.

Paulo Valed Perry, the president of the Disciplinary Committee of the Brazilian Sports Court decided to deduct Lusa four points on Monday, meaning they drop from 12th to 17th spot and are relegated in Fluminense's place.

The decision sparked wild celebrations from Flu fans outside the court, though the saga may not be over yet as Portuguesa retain the right to appeal. --------------- goal.com
