New Ashley Young dive row: Watch Manchester United winger win controversial penalty against Real Sociedad
The England winger came under fire from Roy Keane, but was defended by manager David Moyes on Tuesday
Going down: Young made the most of innocuous looking contact
David Moyes refused to condemn Ashley Young after the Manchester United winger was caught up in a fresh diving storm.
Young went to ground theatrically during United's draw with Real Sociedad, winning a penalty which Robin van Persie struck against a post.
Replays
of
the incident showed Young made the most of minimal contact and the
28-year-old was castigated by TV pundit and former United captain Roy
Keane, who accused him of conning ref Nicola Rizzoli.
Keane
tore into Young - warned earlier this season by Moyes about diving
- and said: “You could say he’s obviously played for it. If you’re a
Manchester United player and you see a player getting tugged back you
want him to go down.
“Ashley Young has obviously gone down too
much over the last few months. He’s been heavily criticised in England,
but of course we’re playing in a foreign country and it’s almost more
acceptable. But I think he’s conned
the referee there.”
Ray Wilkins said on Sky Sports: "This is
pathetic. This is as bad for me as all these over-the-top tackles we’re
getting at the moment because that is a conning of the referee. I just
wish Ashley would cut this out because he’s a good player but he’s
getting a bad name."
But
United boss Moyes defended Young.
"I’ve seen it," said the Scot. "The boy tugs him in the box. The referee is two yards away from it and decides to give it.
"He’s got a penalty kick for a decision tonight. I don’t know about his reputation, but the referee is there and he gave it.
"The
referee
made decisions all night. He’s the one who saw fit to award a penalty
and send a player off. I thought the referee made decisions and that was
the referee’s choice."
United’s
goalless draw has thrown Group A wide open, with Moyes’s men in a
three-way tussle with Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk to secure a
place in the knockout stage.
Moyes
said: “We’re still in a strong position. If we’d won tonight it would
have given us a really strong chance of winning the group. We are still
top, but I do feel like we’ve missed a chance tonight.”
Javier
Hernandez produced a contender for miss of the season shortly after the
break, scooping the ball over the bar from six yards out.
Moyes
said: “The miss was an opportunity. It bobbled up a little bit to be
fair to him. He gets in these positions and that’s normally where he
gets his goals from.”
