"At Chelsea you have to win, every match": Schurrle knows expectations are sky high

Andre Schurrle has promised Chelsea will make Schalke pay for their
St James’ Park debacle - so they avoid another dressing room
paint-stripper from Jose Mourinho.
The Chelsea chief went public
with his anger after his side slipped to their second Premier League
defeat of the season on Saturday.
Within the inner sanctum,
though, Mourinho’s fury appears to have exceeded the Richter Scale, with
the Blues boss tearing into his team.
And Schurrle, accepting
Chelsea had simply not met the standards demanded by Mourinho or
themselves, vowed there will be no repeat in Wednesday night’s Champions
League meeting with his countrymen.
The German, now settled in
London after his £18million summer move from Bayer Leverkusen, said: “I
think it’s normal that he was frustrated.
“We had a bad match and we didn’t play well. It’s only normal that the manager wasn’t very happy with us.
“When
we do something wrong or don’t play well he always tells us
straightaway. But he also does it directly - face to face with us.
“That’s
good because after that, after he’s told you, you know you have to do
something to prove him wrong, to prove we are a good team and that we
can play well. Roarinho: Chelsea boss gave his men both barrels at St James' Park

“But it’s quite right when you lose, or don’t play that well,
that the manager should criticise you. We know we have to reach the
standards the manager wants from us, all the time.
“It’s not just
about being 100 per cent and 100 per cent motivated in the big matches.
At Chelsea you have to win, every match. Not just in the Premier League
or the Champions League but the Cups, too.
"Here, you have to win everything - every match. And that means we have to be right in every match we play.”
Such a mind-set will be music to Mourinho’s ears.
Schurrle
may be only 22 but there is a maturity and ambition about him that's
impossible to miss - as well as a command of English which would
embarrass a few home-grown players.
So far, his sole Chelsea goal
was their opener in the recent win over Manchester City, but he scored
14 in his last season at Leverkusen - and wants more of the same.
That means putting himself in the right place.
“I’m
always expecting from myself that I will score goals,” added Schurrle,
whose best friend is Spurs' Lewis Holtby, a former team-mate at Mainz.
“I have done that in my career (see video below) and should do it here.
"The opponents in England are more physical, so I’ve had to do a lot of work in the gym. I feel stronger already.
“But what helps is the way we play - turning defence into attack so quickly. That’s my football.
"When we play on the counter-attack that I feel I can show my skills, my speed and pace. It’s perfect for me.
“I
know that my job when the ball is going down the other flank is to make
sure I get in the box - that’s where the goal is, where goals come
from, where you need to be.
“When there’s a chance, I have to be there - in the right place. If I’m not there I will never score.
“You
have to have that mentality - to keep doing it even if you miss one or
two chances. The reality is that you will miss chances in football, but
you have to make sure you are there for the next one and score that chance.
“Then
you know what the reaction from the fans will be. It’s unbelievable.
Everybody, everywhere, is making a huge sound, all the time.
“In Germany, you do get that noise, but it’s normally from one part of the stadium. Here, it’s everywhere.
“I
couldn’t believe the atmosphere during the City game. I had some
friends over and when I was coming back home after the game they were
saying to me, ‘Oh my God! That was incredible!”’

A goal against Schalke, as part of a Blues win, would be perfect.
Schurrle
said his former Bundesliga foes are “a good team with good offensive
players - Julian Draxler, Kevin Prince Boateng and Adam Szalai - but if
we do our match, what we can do, we have to win at Stamford Bridge.
“We
didn’t play well against Basel [losing at home in the opening group
game], which meant we were under pressure in the next games and had to
win them.
"It is vital we go through, and if we can win this one we will be close to doing that.”
