  Yann Sommer

  Left exposed by Dragovic's error for the opener but could have done much better than to flap at Dempsey's second, even if it was from close range. Otherwise, he was equal to everything that came his way and made a good stop in the shootout.

  Defensively very solid, quickly snuffing out the threat posed by Walker. Did not offer too much as an attacking force in support of Stocker.

  Philipp Degen

  Never tested by Sigurdsson, who looked uncomfortable trying to beat him one-on-one, and hugged the right touchline to support Salah when Basel went forward. Moved to the right wing late in the game and for extra time, but could not conjure too much up.

  Aleksandar Dragovic

  Made a terrible mess of clearing Vertonghen's through ball to allow Dempsey to open the scoring but made amends when he poked home from close range to put Basel in front. Also headed very, very narrowly wide from a free kick.

  Fabian Schär

  Got to Stocker's corner at the near post to flick a header that Friedel spilled before Dragovic tapped in. Defensively, he did not have a hard time keeping Adebayor in check but Dempsey's ability to pop up in space caused more problems.

  Frequently ran into promising positions in a position off Streller but he was sluggish in his decision-making, often labouring in possession, and his passing was not as sharp as he would have liked in the final third. Brought off for Diaz shortly before the hour mark.

  Valentin Stocker

  More of a passer than Salah, and Basel struggled, relative to the first leg at least, to put together many slick passing moves. Delivered a good corner from the right that led to their second goal, however.

  Kept things ticking over deep in central midfield and was another player with a threatening set piece in his armoury, sending in one delivery that Dragovic flicked just wide.

  Sat deep in midfield and moved the ball laterally but was also a significant threat from distance, stinging Friedel's palms with one effort before he struck the post in extra time with a brilliant 30-yard rocket.

  Marco Streller

  An impressive player - he always seems to be in the right place to offer a passing option, holds the ball up well and is capable of turning his marker. The service he received was not great, though, until he was released by Salah and Vertonghen was sent off for his subsequent trip.

  Mohamed Salah

  Not as electrifying as he was in the first leg but still a considerable threat, and took his goal well to level the scores. Struggled to find as much space as he had done at White Hart Lane to run at the Spurs defence, but his ability to run onto passes and his own use of the ball still gave the visitors plenty to think about.

  Very energetic at right-back in the first leg and brought the same enthusiasm after his introduction here, but could not carve out any real openings.

  Involved quite prominently after Spurs went down to 10 men and Basel dominated possession, and curled one left-footed shot just wide of Friedel's far post.

  Did not have much chance with Salah's first goal for the home side but should have done better than to parry Schar's header straight back out to allow Dragovic to put Basel in front.

  Jan Vertonghen

  Did not do too bad a job at the back until he was sent off for tripping Streller as the striker looked set to go through on goal. Spurs certainly frustrated Basel in open play more effectively than they had done in the first leg, but errors around him were punished clinically. With the benefit of an error by Dragovic, he claimed an assist on Dempsey's opener when his attempted through ball trickled through.

  Kyle Naughton

  Looked a weak link at the back for Spurs. Fortunate to get away with holding back Salah as the winger looked to run clear and was later booked for another challenge on the same player. Left Salah open to level the game, although Dembele's error had put the whole back four at risk.

  Michael Dawson Top of the Match

  Made a number of important interceptions and clearing headers, including one block on a Streller square pass that almost certainly would have been converted. Could do little to prevent the two errors from other players that allowed Basel to take the lead, and made another wonderful stop to prevent Alexander Frei from winning the game in the second half of extra time.

  Kyle Walker

  Tried to power forward down the right flank in the early stages, but found himself isolated as Dempsey shifted inside. Did not have too much to do defensively as Stocker normally cut inside.

  Clint Dempsey

  Frustrated for the most part, and earned himself a booking for complaining at the referee at a lack of decisions that went his way. But he did, at least, look like he might give Spurs an option behind the Basel defence and opened the scoring by finishing coolly after pouncing on an error before prodding home a second after taking down Huddlestone's pass.

  Something of a passenger for the most part. Accurate enough with his passing, but offers no real penetration and does not snap into tackles like he used to.

  Neat in midfield but not as creative as Villas-Boas might have hoped in the No.10 position. Played one superb pass through to Adebayor, which the Togolese failed to take advantage of, but more moments like that were needed. In fairness, he probably did not have a whole lot to aim at.

  Guilty of giving the ball away in a poor position in the build-up to Basel's first goal and was the first Spurs player to be substituted in the second half having picked up a booking. Replaced by Carroll.

  Largely uninvolved on the left flank. His delivery from set pieces was good, but he never had the beating of Degen or many sights of goal.

  Caused very few problems in dangerous areas and was forced to seek possession out wide, where he was entirely unthreatening. Still had two decent chances, both of which he wasted. His awful penalty in the shootout flew high and wide.
