Malawi to Boycot Eagles Clash iF...
The Football Association of Malawi(FAM) has hinted that the country's Council of Sports' lackadaisical attitude to the welfare of The Flames may push it to withdraw the national team from major football competitions.
And this will be music to the ears of the Super Eagles who have a decisive 2014 World Cup qualifying match with the Flames in September.
Malawian newspaper, The Nation, on Tuesday reported that FAM president, Walter Nyamilandu threatened to pull the Flames out of important events if the government continues failing in its responsibility to fund the national team.
Complete Sports garthered that Malawi National Council of Sports(MNCS) rudely rejected the players' and FAM's proposal to increase the national team's match bonuses: from K30,000(about $87) to K100,000(about $290), which has sparked a lingering bad blood between it and the national team fold.
"They(the Flames) have got to prove they deserve a better bonus," The Nation quoted the Malawi Sports Council Executive Secretary, George Jana as rebuffing.
"It is not like we don't like our boys or that we do not want them to be rewarded for their sweat, but they have got to demonstrate that they deserve better allowances.
"Their performance and results do not portray a team which is putting an effort. National team is not a money-generating entity, it's for one to display patriotism. Yes, rewards are there, but it is more about serving one's country."
Jana argued further: "You cannot tell me that Drogba gets more money when he plays for Ivory Coast compared to his appearance fee at club level."
"One must achieve beyond projected profit to qualify for a bonus. So, they are supposed to be paid(a bonus) after winning a tournament and not a mere preliminary game.
"We have to consider how our economy is compared to the other countries. Why compare oranges and apples?"
Stressed-out FAM president, Walter Nyamilandu described the situation as unfortunate.
"It is unfortunate because the players need to be motivated if we expect them to give out something extra," Nyamilandu stated.
"We made the recommendations(for allowance increase) having noted that the allowances are not fair and attractive compared to other countries in the region."
The Flames captain Joseph 'Shakira' Kamwendo responded furiously to the government's position on their bonus increment request.
"Is that what they are saying? Then, so be it. I need to convey the message to my colleagues before I say anything," a livid Kamwendo snapped. ------------------------- complete sports
