David Moyes admitted his defence needs to improve after they lost again on their pre-season tour, writes David McDonnell in Yokohama. United
went down 3-2 to Yokohama F-Marinos in Yokohama to make it a second defeat in three games for Moyes since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Moyes was unhappy with United’s display and said: “I’m disappointed with the goals we conceded,” said Moyes. “We had a lot of opportunities to finish the game
off.
“We had great chances at 2-1 and had other chances after that. We
didn’t take them. It was a tough game. They are decent and played well.
“The biggest thing was the effort the players had to put in. The players worked really hard.
“You
could tell how hot it was and we were trying to get as many of them
through 90 minutes as possible. Some did very well and we were pleased
with that.”
Poor defending led to the goals they conceded, particularly
Yokohama’s 87th-minute winner, while local favourite Shinji Kagawa made
his first appearance of
the tour and created the biggest cheer when he came on just after the
hour.

He was named man of the match despite playing for only 30 minutes and Moyes was impressed with his contribution.
“It
was the first time I’d seen him play,” said Moyes. “He had a great
chance to score when he came on and almost another chance when Ashley
Young could have played him in.
“If he’d scored then maybe the man of the match award would have been justified. I was pleased to have him back, though.”
Rio
Ferdinand and Michael Carrick did not figure and Moyes said: “With Rio
we decided to give him a rest. I wanted to get Chris Smalling, Jonny
Evans and Phil Jones a game.
“Michael felt his groin tighten and there’s no point in taking risks. I can’t see it keeping him out for long.”
