West Bromwich Albion fine striker Peter Odemwingie £76,000 following latest Twitter outburst
West Bromwich Albion have fined Peter Odemwingie £76,000 for his latest outburst but will not be ordering the forward to come off Twitter.
Odemwingie has been punished with a second fine of two weeks’ wages by Albion’s
board after criticising the club in a string of attacks on the social
networking website.
The 31-year-old claimed that he wanted to be sacked and also rounded on head
coach Steve Clarke for leaving him on the bench for the past four Premier
League games.
In a wide-ranging rant he also hinted that he had taken steroid injections to
be fit for matches and said his team-mates were unhappy with his salary.
Odemwingie infuriated Albion in January after submitting a transfer request
and then driving to Loftus Road on deadline day in a bid to push through a
move to Queens Park Rangers.
His latest meltdown takes his fines this year to nearly £160,000, though there
are no plans to force him into deleting his Twitter account.
Albion could sack him for gross misconduct but believe the punishment is heavy
enough. However, Albion will attempt to sell him this summer and he could
even have played his last game under Clarke.
The club issued a statement which said: “The club is aware of comments made by Peter Odemwingie which will be dealt with internally.”
Albion’s players did not train on Monday but Odemwingie is facing another stormy reception from team-mates when they report back later this week.
In February he was involved in a fierce confrontation with defender Steven Reid in the medical room at the club’s training ground. Odemwingie, a £2 million signing from Lokomotiv Moscow in August 2010, has one year left on his contract after this season.------- The Telegraph
